Made a new thread for this...there was a post about it somewhere, as part of another thread.

Have anyone had any success with the any extensions besides .com. .net. .org? I noticed one of the hosts here has the website extension (.ws) and seemed to be doing okay with it.

I was thinking of trying it out with domains I own the .com for, if only for to use as pointer for my .com sites.

i personally wouldn't recommend it, but i'm also working on just the meager experience in my head and of people i've talked to...

i don't think the 'general public' understands the concept... case in point: although a good many of my acquaintances understand the .ca designation (they live in canada...) the idea of any other country (like .ie, .st, .gl) whatever, is sorta foreign to them... much too exotic... i think they are still having troubles remmebering .com/.net/.org

but hey, if you've got cash and nothing better to do, register a few, and see which ones get the most traffic... :)

There've been a number of posts on this, here and elsewhere. In general, public acceptance of the newer extensions seems to be somewhat slow... a shame, in that we really need them. At present, I try to avoid them for that reason.

You'll note that few (if any?) of the deep-pocket sites are using them; as, apparently, they're well aware that people expect a .com on the end of a url.

However, if you expect to get the overwhelming majority of your traffic via search engines and external links, it really doesn't much matter.

i also think i'd be more into them if they weren't overly crazy marketed hyped, etc...

.cc / .ws kinda tire me with that over the board, "the end of the .com era, need .cc/.ws names" advertising, i dunno, but i'm pretty wannabe anti-corporate, so maybe that's just my opinion...

i like .org names, look very organic... (get it? ha... nevermind)

While I'll probably try some of the new extensions eventually I think for the forseeable future peopel are "trained" to think .com, .net and .org in that order.

I agree with etLux in that until some big well known name like Amazon starts using a new extension and promoting it as such Johny Q. Public will be slow in accepting it.

I noticed that some of the big companies are using them as pointers. http://www.ibm.ws goes to their .com addy.

Amazon, Yahoo and many others will have to send a nasty email to get theirs since website.ws has 'em.

The worst case scenario, is that it is another way to get on the search engines.

I admit though, I am a domain-shopaholic. :)

You'd have to define what you mean by success for a clear answer. It's different for the registrars pushing the ccTLDs than for the people using them.

This topic has indeed been covered before. The consensus seems to be that they are largely a waste of money except mostly for very large companies. It's cheaper and more beneficial to register under various ccTLDs than to pay attorneys for trademark infringements. That's why you see Intel registering Pentium under various ccTLDs, and other large companies. Even though no one could use coca-cola legally, a domain registration is cheaper than an attorney. It also prevents tarnishing of the company image.

I have bunch of .tf, .gs, .vg domains but I don't want to list them on my site right now. I think they will take at least 20 years to become a popular like .com :D. For example, these are okay domains: search.gs or tf.tf.

Btw, .tv is smart, the ecommerce.tv costs about $23,000, yearly, what the heck? Saigon.tv (Vietnamese city) cost about $2,500. Well, $20,000 price makes sense for good domain name, but one time only, nobody fool enough to pay every year. Those folks at .tv are crazy.

Live in LA? Louisiana? You can now register .la domains for the measly sum of $200/year. The only reason I can see for getting a ccTLD would be if it's catchy (like .tv) or if it would make sense in a local market (like LA).
