I hate to say it but I think I've finally had enough of Network Solutions.

Can anyone please recommend a registrar that will point to my nameservers and thats it? I don't need email or webhosting / webforwarding services (thanks anyways). I'm even willing to pay a reasonable amount for the service. (I was paying $35 a year to NetSol, right?)

All I want to do is:
1) Have all my domains under one account
2) Be able to modify registration info - including nameservers
3) Be able to modify my nameserver info.
4) Have modifications/additions updated globally within 24 hours

I'd like to be able to help my customers buy domains, so a reseller option would be good but I can live without it.

I'm looking at stargate and ghandi, are there any better ones?

GKG.net is who I would recommend. Almost as cheap as GoDaddy, but a heck of a lot easier to deal with...

Well, I heard good things about StarGate and decided to give them a shot. I am transferring a domain from (shudder) NameZero and so far everything has been smooth.

One thing has me worried though. The transfer was approved last Thursday. Ever since then, the WHOIS document has come up blank on StarGate’s site and when I try to access it from any other registrar I get something like this:

So it looks like StarGate has the domain, and they say it can take up to 5 business days to complete the transfer, but it looks like they’ve just been sitting on it for 4 of those business days. Maybe they are waiting for something to happen behind the scenes? I don’t know, but I hope this transfer completes soon so I don’t have to worry about it any more.

Stargate were looking pretty good to me. I sure hope I don't have any trouble moving my domains over. I'll wait to find out how you guys did.

Another thought, anyone have problems changing ownership of domains? I'd like to retain ownership of any domains I register (on behalf of clients) until I am paid for that domain's registration. I'd then change the ownership to the client. Is this something worth doing? Is there a better way to handle it without leaving myself open to abuse?

Register the domains in your name. Then you change the domain ownership when you want. After they pay you. ;)

At stargate you dont pay anything to do that.

Well, StarGate came through for me today. They promise to complete the transfer within 5 business days and they completed mine today on the fifth day. I was getting a little impatient before, but I am definitely relieved now. I’m glad to have transferred this domain out of the evil clutches of NameZero. :dgrin:

I like the StarGate control panel as it is pretty easy to use. Apparently you can use their name servers to point your domain to any IP you wish – cool! :)

They look like the better registrar for me. I just registred 2 new domains through them (to see how they operate) and they were up and pointing to my name servers within 24 hours. I recieved confirmation of registration within minutes. NetSol took almost 3 days to do the same thing and cost almost 3 times as much.

Boy, do I feel foolish for staying with NetSol this long.

On the topic of registrar provided DNS:
While it's great for them to offer to handle DNS for their customers. I personally would never let another company handle my DNS anymore. I've had a few bad experiences with upstream DNS servers and their admin staff who obviously don't quite "get it". I do think that it's a great tool for someone who doesn't know the inner working of DNS and doesn't really need to. I'm developing a similar tool for my clients who need to occasionally change a hostname or mx record.
