View Full Version : Hosthideout question (really just chat question)
Chicken 02-06-2002, 02:16 PM OK, little poll as I just wondered what (in your opinion) is the most important to you in terms of the chat. In the future, I'm going to make some adjustments one way or another. What you need to know to vote:
Membership:
Advantage:
Users would have certain fields filled out automatically, and would be able to secure usernames.
Disadvantage:
Users would *have* to register (and login) from one page, and any links from other sites would just have to be that, links to the login/reg page.
NO Membership:
Advantage:
Users could log in from any site given permission (login box and code fully on the other site, chat looks like it is installed on their site). Other sites (directories, forums, etc.) could be asked if they want chat (all sites together might give it enough to have a decent crowd in there all the time), and users would connect from their site.
Disadvantage:
Users' fields *not* filled out automatically, and you would *not* be able to secure usernames.
For now, this is all I want to know. If another option is needed, or I think of something else, I'll close the poll and ask it again.
RapidColo 02-06-2002, 03:44 PM I would like to be able to keep my user name so i say Membership.. :) :)
Revelation 02-06-2002, 07:16 PM why not give any sites that want it access to the members database for a small fee? Just add a new user/pass with access to the appropriate table.
RotoHost 02-06-2002, 07:26 PM Merbeership ....all the way.
As perviously suggested, you could even charge a small fee to those wishing to secure user names.
Vortech 02-06-2002, 07:33 PM Just an idea here tell me what you think..
Ok the name HostHideout.com kind of cool. But as it sounds it is a Hide Out For Hosts right? Go with me here.. Why not make it so its for Hosts that have been approved only? Like a little hide out for hosts were they could talk about any thing to do with web hosting with out end users seeing it..
Just an idea for the Chick.. ;)
P.S. Could maybe include and little VB message board in there as well were we could trade ideas with out a end user seeing it or talk about things you may not want users to really see.

I can't even get a steady stream for free, I don't think a paid structure would fly at the moment. ;)

Yes, the plan was a hideout for hosts, to some degree. Get away from the meanie customers hee hee (j/k). I'm not sure I could police access well enough, nor I'd want to, as to only enable a certain person to get access. It seems like that would most likely bee a fruitless effort.

I have a few things in store for hosts, right now I'm stuck on the name. I asked 9 people, they all voted 3 votes for each name (I suppose I should have asked 10 to be sure there waasn't a tie eh? -I wasn't that brilliant with my polling).
Basically, the chat still remains at the bottom of the to-do list, but if membership is desired (which it seems it is) over mass amounts of people, then I have to tie it in with #2 on the list.

Well I think one of them was great - but not very applicable. Maybe it needs to go to a larger poll? HH still works for me.
re: membership for hosts... why not just match signup e-mail and host names to the whois record.... ta da! Member signs up, says who he/she is, and gets their info sent to what's already on record for them at the registrars. If it's not their direct e-mail I'm sure it would be passed on to them as a 'speaker' for the company right?

LOL, I tried to post it but was denied... 1 thread per 5 days... forum guidelines:smash:
akashik 02-07-2002, 05:09 AM funny :)
Maybe you just need to get someone to post the poll on your behalf.

Chicken 02-07-2002, 11:07 AM That wouldn't be very moderatorily of me now would it? ;) I could almost post it in the domain names forum, but it's a bit grey and I'd rather just wait and play by the rules like everyone else.
*taps impatiently* :D

I'd hate to log in and find myself (another user using my normal name).

Kind of like showing up to a party, only to find out you've already been there for a few hours, had too much to drink, and made an ass of yourself - now everyone hates you. :) Talk about socially uncomfortable.
