View Full Version : Severe Problems with Rackshack ! ...
thebigH 02-06-2002, 12:14 PM Hello,
My 2 servers at rackshack are down.
216.40.212.50
216.40.243.8
I have submited 5 trouble tickets but no response for the last 5 hrs. I called them and they said that there have been some DOS attacks on their servers and the servers will be up within 1 hr. But its more than 5 hrs now.
There chat has not been working for the last 12 hrs...
And now they are not picking up the phone for the last three hours.
Just wana know if someone else having the same problem and when will this gonna be fixed???
Patrick-EV1 02-06-2002, 12:56 PM First, the 216.40.212.50 you mentioned is up and fully accessable by all accounts from telnet and web.
The second one, I dont see any 'Reboot' tickets logged in our system for that server. I've changed your ticket of 'Cannot Find Server' to a reboot so we can bring your server up, there are no major DoS attacks preventing access to all servers going on. In the future if you submit a ticket as 'Reboot' it gets immediate attention.
Our technicians are answering phone calls and are all on calls at this very moment, I even tried calling it from my location at the DataCenter and got right through, IRC is temporarily disabled from the outside due to security reasons.
thebigH 02-06-2002, 01:11 PM Hi,
I have tried to ping 216.40.212.50 from 2 locations .... server is dead ... can anyone please confirm .... may be i hv some prob here ... but I am sure i don't have ....
The ticket I submited about 216.40.243.8 was not about reboot. I got the reply that it needs reboot. Then I got a message from you that there was a boot loop at it needs a fresh install (restore).
It's more than 5 hrs now ...... please look into this matter immediately ... or atleast inform me about the situation ....
ho247 02-06-2002, 01:21 PM thebigH... ping has been disabled due to some security problem, a DOS attack on the network I think. If you go to your server via the web it should work.

thebigH 02-06-2002, 01:29 PM How can i go through web and administer when the port to work
..............
is of ssh kindly tell me the way nobody here is able to access his site hosted there..........
Kindly do something so that i can check the state of my server
thebigH 02-06-2002, 01:38 PM I have tried opening the sites through browser .... Sites are not coming up on 216.40.212.50 ....
http://www.wegaweb.com
http://www.debug-zone.com
dektong 02-06-2002, 01:40 PM http://216.40.212.50/ seems to work OK (giving me cobalt page). I tried to SSH into 216.40.212.50, but failed ... Then I tried to telnet into it and got into the login prompt. So, you do not have SSH installed but only Telnet (beware, telnet is not secure and you have given out your IPs).
http://216.40.243.8/ can't load, neither SSH/telnet work.
cheers,
thebigH 02-06-2002, 01:51 PM Goddddd...
They have reinstall 216.40.212.50 ... and all the 300 sites on the server are gone ....
They had to reinstall the other server ... which is 216.40.243.8 .. which is still not coming up ...
:bawling:
ho247 02-06-2002, 03:04 PM A full restore of the servers?? Do you mind telling us why they needed a full restore? I would like to know because it is stupid to give a full restore and lose all the website data if it's not needed.

Alan A better question is.... since from what I've seen through the DDOS attacks at RS, down time has been at a mimimum (good job RS doods!) and the forum there has not been down at all... Why is this person doing all this posting over here and not at RS??

He's posting here because people have more experience here. They can also bash rackshack if they need to. On the RS forum, if you bash them, obviously it's going to rub off on you. lol. I'd rather post here anyways as well. Faster response and more experience.

dabystru 02-07-2002, 07:51 PM Of my 28 servers with RackShack I had one customer's server down because of DOS attack TO his server. And another customer's server down because of DOS attacks FROM his server (actually, RS plugged that server off the network, which probably was the only possible thing to do given the circumstances).
This all started in the morning of Feb 5 and ended on the same day. Other 26 servers seemed to be up & not having any attacks originating from them or targeting them.
They are running now, no problems since then.

... SYSTEM RESTORE is the ultimate and sometime ONLY solution you get from RackShack and their incompetent support. The only EXEPTION is Patrick and 3 others (you know who you are).
Only that people Patrick cost their (well earned) money and RS is not spending much on th esupport staff budget :(
My time with RS was horrorshow and if it wasn't for Patrick who saved the day several times, THANKS M8!!, I would have gone mad... thanks god I am now away from them!
ho247 02-11-2002, 03:27 PM I agree, it seems that the solution to all of Rackshack's software problems is a full system restore, why??? They could probably save more time if they just solved the problem.
But I haven't had the need for a full system restore, yet, my server's been running great since I purchased it :).
Alan
Why? Because Rackshack does not provide any software support apart from making sure that the initial setup will work. These are dedicated servers, not managed servers.
So, if you can't save your server trough SSH, they will only offer to restore it, nothing else. If there is still something that can be done at a distance and a customer doesn't know how, they should hire a 3rd party to do it. All future customers of Rackshack should be avare of that.
Why Rackshack doesn't provide software support at a suitable price is another question... perhaps they grow too fast. But their forums are a good place to learn, atleast they have that.
Funny thing is - I was once in the Rackshack's IRC channel. There was this guy/gal asking sales person wheather he/she can manage a Plesk server just trough a control panel. Sales guy was a bit stunned, but did't offer much resistance :cartman: That guy/gal didn't want to hear that "basic linux knowledge" part of the sentence and sales represntative didn't bother to repeat it. :D
No wonder some Rackshack servers go down in flames

William 02-11-2002, 10:34 PM how can anyone complain at the prices that they offer for ???
