View Full Version : Changing a customer's domain name

I have a local design client for whom I maintain a few sites. He has managed to secure a shorter version of his domain name and wants to switch over. I'm just not sure of the best way to do this.

So his current domain is, let's say, site123456.com. He also owns let's say, site123.com and currently has it parked on site123456.com. What he wants is for his main site to be site123.com with site123456.com parked on it. In other words, the reverse of how it is now.

I suppose one way is to create a new account in WHM for site123.com and upload all his files to it. Simple. The problem is that my customer will then lose all his history of Webalizer stats from site123456.com. That won't do.

So is there any way to just "change" the domain of the existing account so that he still keeps all his stats?

Hmm. I'm just noticing in WHM that if I click "Modify An Account", it actually lets me change the domain name. Is this the solution? And will it still maintain all the old stats?

Vito,
You can change the domain name from the "Modify An Account" section with no problems. As long as you don't change the user name, I believe all stats will be kept. Most things are tracked by the user name and not the actual domain name.

I am sure somebody will correct me if I am wrong - one of the great things about WHT.

Thanks, Dacsoft.

I'll wait to hear from one more person confirming what you're saying (since you don't sound 100% sure of it). ;)

Vito,
Just checked with one of my test domains. Seems that email accounts get changed just fine. Bandwitdth seems to convert alright. But most of the stats are not instantly available. They are looking for a domain.com.conf file that isn't there. I don't know if would update at midnight or not. There might be a script to handle this but I am not sure. It can probably be done - but I am sure you don't want to experiment with a live account. Hopefully somebody will know the answer to the question.

Hey, Dacsoft. Thanks so much for going to the trouble of investigating it further (you guys are great :D )

Yes, I think I'll wait until someone gives me a firm reply before I mess up the customer's account.

Vito - You can change the username and/or the domain name...then, what we do, is run two scripts via SSH

1) /scripts/fixeverything
2) /scripts/runlogsnow

Everything should be fine and dandy :)
