Hi folks,
I own a RAQ4 at rackshack and use their DNS server. The problem is that I host 3 ".ru" domains and our national register doesn't allow secondary name server in the same zone with primary so I use "ns4.nic.ru" as a secondary name server for them. It was ok for about 5 month but suddenly I start receiving automated messages from "ns4.nic.ru" that it can't obtain zone from primary server.

I have left following trouble ticket at rackshack:

Hello
Could you please allow zone transfer for ns4.nic.ru from ns1.rackshack.net for following domains:
www.artics. ru
www.kozerog.ru
www.isoflex.spb.ru

Reply from rackshack's support:
not understanding what you are needing.. are you wanting to remove these domains from DNS?

My next trouble ticket:
No, I dont need to remove those domains from DNS.

All I want is to allow zone transfer for ns4.nic.ru(194.226.96.8) because it is a secondary name server for those domains.
It worked ok for more than 5 month but last 3 days I receive error messages from admin of ns4.nic.ru that it cant update zone from primary nameserver.

And all I've got from them:I am sorry not understanding what you are meaning by a zone transfer..

Could you please advice what should I tell to support.

Thanks in advance

Tell support to buy a copy of DNS & BIND :D.

You phrased the letter pretty much, correctly...try this:

I have the following domains:

artics. ru
kozerog.ru
isoflex.spb.ru

Primary DNS service is provided by RackShack, on ns1.rackshack.net, secondary name service provided by ns4.nic.ru(194.226.96.8).

For some reason ns4.nic.ru is no longer able to get updates from ns1.rackshack.net. Please have one of your DNS Administrators adjust the named.conf file on ns1.rackshack.net so it again permits ns4.nic.ru to obtain updated information.

Holy Crap that tech must be a moron.

I'm not saying all their techs are morons, but the one answering your questions is. You couldn't have phrased it better.

Anyways, we have five nameservers now four of which are on different subnets if you want to use mine.

Thanks for your help, guys.

I've left one more trouble ticket with link to this thread and all I've got was
We do not allow transfers from third party name servers

Well, I have e-mailed support politely asking to allow me using third party secondary nameserver and still waiting for reply.
Any suggestions on what should I do if they refuse?

If that is the case, your best is to use a service like erverydns.net, have your DNS completely managed by a third party provider. It also makes it easier to leave RackShack if you have to in the future :D.
