As a hosting company

Have you ever given a REFUND? What was the main reason for it?

I think you'll get more responses if you post this in the "running a web hosting biz" forum. :)

Hello,
Yes we have. If the customer isn't satisfied with the service or if it doesn't fit there needs we will. Dedicated hosting isn't for everyone and sometimes people get in over there heads or expect managed service.
If the customer honestly didn't know what (s)he was doing we'll do it without question. However if they've been useing the service and just want to slip away without paying no dice.
Also avara's post was a valid suggestion why the flame reaction?

Bahres - please be polite to others and leave the flaming reaction out. There is a very good reason for the 'be polite' rule being there in the guidelines (http://www.webhostingtalk.com/misc.php?s=&action=forum-rules)....

Thank you.

6 "No" so far!
I'm a bit worried: how can a host, once a certain size achieved, not have issued at least *one* refund?

There's many good reasons why you should issue a refund. For instance the customer who got confused and believes you're offering unlimited email accounts whereas you're not.

Sometimes people sign up with the full intention of using their account, only to have something come up a week or so later that causes them to cancel. In most cases people haven't even asked for a refund, though it's stamped on the front page of our site. We do it anyway as it's literally only a matter of poking a button within the first month.

30 day refunds are pretty much a cornerstone of this business given the industry standard at times. As cyansmoker stated, at some stage there will always be a reason for a refund.

I have given refunds to:

People who use 29 days and then refund on the last day. I have a 30 day money back guarantee policy.. These people are known as Host Abusers.

People who thought they would start a great business, but didn't do it in 30 days so they cancelled their service.

People who thought that we would create a website for them if they signup.

People who signup and found out that we don't have a certain feature, e.g. Cold Fusion or ASP.

People who send SPAM, setup BNCs or store warez and then quit after they finish their illegal business.

People who signup, never use their account, and then months later demand a charge-back.

You get all sorts of people in the world of web hosting, just like any other industry.

You have given refunds to these people? With the exceptions of the people who think/thought you were going to create a website for them, and the people who thought you offered ASP / Cold Fusion.. I see no reason to issue refunds to the said types of customers. I suppose the only reason it would make sense is to protect your reputation, which has to suck for hosts as these people are getting one over on you.

good point, I don't think I would give refunds to the ones who do that

A 30 day money back satisfaction is a 30 day money back contract all the way till 30 days. Cancel on day 1 is the same as canceling on day 29, unless you say "pro-rated" (that's what I thought it meant).

Bites dealing with those types, but it's part of what to expect if your advertizing it a 30 day satisfaction guarentee.

Could you imagine what would happen to your business if word got out you didn't honor your satisfaction guarentee (or was a real booty head about it).

To date, we've never given a refund or been asked for one. We also have the 30 day money back guarantee but have never had anyone unsatisfied with our service within that time. I've given free months of hosting to customers that had to suffer through downtime when we were just starting out or oddball happenings. I'm sure that our day will come when we'll begin dealing with refunds.

I have given a refund once because the customer found on some host directory that we give a dedicated ip and when i went back to him and said we need a $ /mo more for that he cancelled

But then I have really not been promoting my business at all so I have only 21 clients so far
... and I have got close to 600$ paid upfront! my reseller plan cost me only 20$/mo, so no complaints

Only after I move to my own server can I go full swing on this

Cheers
