i saw this deal too. think is

http://www.kingcomp.net/colocation%20intro.htm

i know they use a cogent line. i have email the guy and got replies, but it still seems shady to me. i would get it in a second if i knew what kind of server they would give me and what klind of software, but he really didnt asnwer that question when asked.

I've maild petr@kingcomp.net and got a reponse within 20 minutes.
That's what I get concerning the OS and supplementary software:
we will install in OS of your choice....any other extra software you have to
download and isnatll your self which is pretty quick with this kind of
connection
I asked them now wich OS (I mean, win2k adv. server for free?!?) exactly, let's see what happens ;)

Ok, he told me that when the system is free, you get a free basic installation, the rest is up to you. If you want a non-free system, you have to supply the licence.

I like the look of this place, but there are a couple of things that worry me:

1. How do we know we will get our fair share of the port
2. What happens if we go over our fair share
3. Is Cogent the only provider

that worries me as well

they pay $3000 for a 100Mbit line to cogent but sell 10 Mbit for $199 (dedicated) or even $117 (shared over 3 customers). That makes 1990 for 100 Mbit or 1170 ....

They pay cogent $1000 isnt it? Well the $69 shared with a dedicated server looks ok, i presume you get 3mbit or near, but im still a wee worried.

if they want to resell the lines (offer webhosting or stuff) they have to pay $3000

They know that no one is going to use more than 500 kbps or so average. Well, some may but they're few and far between.

The price is amazing. I am going to test them. I will sign-up and move download.dragonbfp.com there (5 Mbps average at RackShack). Will see what will be the speed change after the move. Will keep you updated.

I've got a box on its way down there now (it should be hooked up tomorrow). I'll let everyone know how it's going once it's hooked up.

I really think we should get someone in there to see this wonder operation. Someone who has seen a quality (or at least working) network operations center. At those prices, something has to fall through somewhere.

dabystru,

So you send your server and get a colo deal? 10 mbps shared or 10 mbps dedicated? Also, what did you do to pull that much traffic in just 2 days? It's peaking around 9mbps now ... Any download file for us to test?

cheers,

Hm ... I thought they only offer you 10mbps shared/dedicated port. So I would suggest they would use 10mbps switch port. But I see dabystru is curretnly pushing 10.8mbps. Hm ... interesting ...

cheers,

As you can see from MRTG graphs, either I am the only one who shares it or they don't apply bandwidth limitation yet. I think the latter is the case, as I got 1.9 MB/s = 15.2 Mbit/s when trasferred a 1.5 GB file from RackShack (tips about good connectivity of RackShack too ;) ).what did you do to pull that much traffic in just 2 days? It's peaking around 9mbps nowI had a site at RackShack which was really pain in the ass as it was pushing 5 Mbps on average and I had to move it from server to server in order not to overcome 300 GB monthly limitationAny download file for us to test?Sure, as you guessed, http://test.saburovo.com/uumap.tar.Z Well, the connection may be saturated though because of that site pushing 5-10 Mbps.

Wow -- congrats! You are really really getting your money's worth. :-) We would pay about $5,000/mo for that connection.

I am one of the first few customers, so they allow us to use their 100 Mbps connection I guess. We should really see how it will be when they get more people signed.

It's good that you are anticipating the future. And of course, and I know we don't want to go there, what if Cogent starts oversubscribing the paid transit and peering. A big "if" I reckon. Have fun boys and girls.
