what exactly is the xeon processor? Why is it a better choice for servers than the Pentium and AMD chips.
Thanks

Thanks Ron mattwade 11-23-2004, 10:38 PM http://www.intel.com/products/server/processors/server/xeon/ It was designed to be a workhorse. cdream 11-23-2004, 11:12 PM how excatly would the xeon be better than the others. Cache and SMP capability, to name a couple differences from the P4. grofinet 11-24-2004, 12:25 AM P4 and Xeon are basically the same. There would be little difference in performance between a single xeon and a p4 if both had hyperthreading and the same cache, fsb. I believe xeons are manufactured to a higher tolerance, and of course SMP support. dollar 11-24-2004, 12:34 AM Originally posted by grofinet P4 and Xeon are basically the same. The key being the HT, cache, and FSB ;) terahost 11-24-2004, 08:04 AM why don't you hear of xeons being used in desktop pcs? Are they too specialised for everday tasks or just more expensive? TLott 11-24-2004, 09:20 AM They are built for high end workstations & servers. By 'they' I mean both the CPU and the motherboards - so yes more expensive. The motherboards are also a bit behind their desktop counterparts in terms of raw performance, as they focus on reliability instead. For example, it took ~9 months for us to see 800mhz FSB xeons after it was introduced on the P4. There are also often unique RAM & power supply requirements with the Xeon motherboards which raise the cost of the overall system. cdream 11-24-2004, 11:36 AM so, for a server that would be running redhat using apache, php, and mysql with a website getting about 30k hits per day which would be better for this. I'm looking at different dedicated hosting packages on servermatrix and there are so many different processors there to choose from. Also i would be using vbulletin on the webiste. I just don't want to get a server that later on I would have to upgrade becuase the processor couldn't handle the load Thanks Ron dollar 11-24-2004, 11:42 AM If you don't want to upgrade, go dual xeon with 2gb ram and SCSI. If you end up needed to upgrade that, you'll just end up with a second server. |
