Ok, I'm putting together a new site, and I'm going to be streaming video from it. Possibly 10-20, 30-45 minute videos eventually. I expect to have approx. 100 or so members streaming at a time eventually (not multicast).

I also will be installing Darwin Streaming Server software which (is free and) can handle any number of users (my server would bog down before the software stopped working). I'm planning on using rackshack because of cost concerns, and root access.

How many servers would I need to handle this traffic?

Your replies are greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Steve :)

There is one variable you left out. What is the quality of your videos? Or quantitatively, what is the size of the file of one minute of your video file?

Darwin 4 is hard to remove. Go for the stable 3 version. I believe there is a good tutorial on how to set it up on the darwin site.

Thanks for the tip phpjames! Priyadi, I'm not sure exactly?!? (bad answer) I have the video footage, and I haven't started to edit it yet. Am I lost or what :)?!?

Thanks,
Steve

P.S. phpjames, would you be willing to install Darwin 3 on a server of mine? If so, how much $$$?

Thanks

What is that Darwin's site, anyway?

www.opensource.apple.com/projects/streaming

Check it out! It's an open source project so it's free. I just can't pay $2500+ for a realserver g2 right now, and it seems like the best alternative.

The best format that I use is the windows media format.

I have built machines before and 250 concurrent users can
stream off any server.

The amount of streams your using is very small.

asf format is the best.

Rus,
What is your setup? What are you using to stream and whats the cost?

Apart from the price how do you think Darwin actualy compairs to realserver?

Is the performance in Darwin superior to realserver?

Are the server requirements greater on realserver than Darwin?

Would be very interested to know as I am using realserver.

I worked with a customer who had long video's and I set him up on (2) Windows2000 boxes with Windows Media. They have over 200 customers.

Quad Xeon's, 1GB RAM, RAID.

I've seen it done on less with success.
