View Full Version : gearhost like hosting solutions
m1sh1 02-05-2002, 04:24 PM Hey, I was wondering if someone could recommend a host with plans very similar to that of gearhost.
I would love to have used gearhost but they have inspired no confidence in them from me since I have been unable to get a reply from them regarding a pre-sales query (sent two times now via their web contact us page). The plans that I am particularly interested are in the Silver plan and the Gold plan (http://www.gearhost.com/services/hosting/shared/prices-features.asp)
Thanks for your help

ASPCode.net 02-05-2002, 04:28 PM Telling the truth you will get a hard time finding something like that. I think you need tp specify which features are most important and which aren't/can be available for a higher price.
I mean offering 20 GB for $9.95 a month is something not many of us can do.
m1sh1 02-05-2002, 04:34 PM You are right I found pretty much the same in terms of the looking around for hosts that I did, they seem to have best price for product, if only they were more responsive, but forget that. The more important part I guess was the fact that gearhost allowed the use of ASP, PHP and ColdFusion. It was one of the few sites that I have seen that allows for all 3. I have a few sites (about 4 - 6) which have been written in these different techs and they seemed to be the only ones that allowed me to use them all. I was thinking of doing a rewrite of some of those sites to stop using Cold Fusion (which sucks for large sites) but for now need something that can offer me those techs. That was the main concern. As for b/w I can live with 3Gb a month for now and will upgrade if that becomes a problem. Space wise do not require much more than 100 - 200 Mb. These sites are personal sites (some) or small - medium business sites with not much on them
RyanK 02-05-2002, 05:21 PM Nav,
I'm sorry you were not able to talk with our sales department, we have been very busy. Is there anything I can answer? My email is ryan@gearhost.com.
avara 02-05-2002, 05:36 PM The only other real web hosting company that I can think of which provides the same large amount of bandwidth for dirt cheap prices is tera-byte.com. But do you really need that amount of bandwidth?
m1sh1 02-05-2002, 05:39 PM Thanks for the offer ryank
I just got a reply to my email from your staff (surprisingly I still have not had a response to my first enquiry but that does not matter as I have received a reply to my second enquiry)
Looks like I am not going to count gearhost out as my host just yet
RyanK 02-05-2002, 05:44 PM Lets just say I had a little part in that response email ;). I took a quess from your name from the list and had Brooke do it. If you have any questions either contact her or myself or call us.
m1sh1 02-05-2002, 05:45 PM Thanks for your suggestion avara but looks like gearhost might just come through on this one
I only need to now know details regarding how easy it would be for me to sign up with them (with a CC and me being in Australia and all) as well as how long between me signing up with them and being able to upload, administer and get my site online.
Anyways thanks to all for the help
Janet 02-05-2002, 06:30 PM Glad you got a response! A couple of my friends haven't heard back from GearHost since sending them pre-sales questions a few days back, through both ryan@gearhost.com and the web form.
I guess people who post on WHT get priority support from them.
Chicken 02-05-2002, 07:51 PM Yeah, *ahem* we really would like to avoid that, I mean really really.
Equilibrium 02-05-2002, 10:29 PM WOW gearhost or Ryan I should say
You would respond to a bulletin board post and not your email, that’s what I call good service.
Is that what a customer have to do to get support from you guys?
Its just an attempt to look good in front of other host if they don’t support your email when your not a customer imagine when you are?
Thanks God for the old U.S.A.

CreedFeed 02-06-2002, 03:27 AM I sent a question to them via their web contact form about 2 weeks ago and have yet to get a response either. It seems that they spend more time posting messages on these forums than answering pre-sales questions from their own contact form.
Personally, I'd recommend using another host... if they won't answer pre-sales questions, wonder what they are like if you actually have a concern as a customer.
RyanK 02-06-2002, 03:33 AM This is in no way how support works. I monitor this forum as any such person wanting to seek how the companies clients feel. WHT is not the only forum, we are popular on the Mac, eZine, MSN and Site Point forums. Support requests are tracked by iControl and monitored, sales requests are not and with over 600 sales requests on average a day that is quite a bit and yes, some do go un-answered but are working on that.
CreedFeed 02-06-2002, 03:37 AM Instead of monitoring these forums, maybe you should answer sales questions? I was ready to host with you, but after two weeks of nothing, I moved elsewhere.
I emailed a few questions to Gearhost just today and received prompt, friendly answers. Not rubbing salt in the wound, I was just very impressed.

Hmm, that doesn't give those of us who haven't received a reply for days a lot of hope that we'll even get a reply.
