Hi,

I recently sold a template to someone from here, received payment and delivered it to them.
A an hour or so later I receive this email :

It has come to our attention that you may be the recipient of potentially
unauthorized funds. We have initiated an investigation into this event. In
the meantime, we have placed a temporary hold on the funds in question
until the investigation is complete. This temporary hold will show as a
deduction in your available balance. In the meantime, you are free to
continue transacting using your PayPal account.

Turns out the buyer was fraudulent, I have even had an email from him after asking whats going on, basically taunting me and thanking me for the template.

Is there anything we can do when selling using paypal in this fashion ?
Or can, basically anything we sell or service we provide, the buyer can get their money back and we are left out of pocket ?

Firstly you must tell the Moderators as they would have this guys IP logged. Also in future you must ask for their telephone number so that your "fraud screening";) can check them out
Works every time!

As amos said, check for real contact info, we even call people before delivering on line services, consider it part of cost and routine !
In all cases try to avoid those weared emails from hotmail or yahoo or other free services.
Anyway, this is one of the on line biz, like any othe biz!

Good luck

I don't blame you for being upset, dalecom.

The problem is that now that you have reported him, he will no doubt be banned, and will soon resurface under another username.

I guess all we can do is take precautionary measures as already suggested. And perhaps stay away from people with only one or two posts (until they prove themselves).

Good luck with your revived thread for selling the template again. I had a look and it's a nice design. :agree:

The trouble is that WHT forums are really well run and seem to be alive with dynamic, honest people,in so much that we tend to trust everyone that posts here.
In all walks of life there is always a couple of work shy tricksters, who would steal the shirt of their old grandad's back - and it is something we all have to be watchful of.
However I am sure that the moderators will be as helpful as they possibly can,and hopefully they will pass on to you some sort of information.
Barclays Bank, who we have our Merchant account with, just sent a pile of new up dated information about fraud screening. They suggest numerous ways to help, for eg.telephone the buyer, and ask them a simple question - this being now part of the new security "fields" you have to enter to process the order --for example >their mothers maiden name.
This sort of thing generally wrong foots the prospective fraudster and puts them straightaway on their guard, and, more often than not they stop the order there and then.If they have a slightest whiff of " you are going to be caught matey", then that is enough to see these sorts of people off.
Hope this helps you in the future.

......

Interesting information, (I admit I haven't read it in detail yet), but if thats the case, I will admit that I would probably stop the order there and then or give them a dummy name. The reason is ID theft, this is just one of those security questions, that I wouldn't hand over to a vendor. It makes me more suspicious of the vendor. Like having to hand over a drivers licence for a webhost......its a tricky fine line.

But thats me

There is so much you can do. But you can still receive fraud orders. But asking for a phone number is a good way to go.

Dont feel back because I got scammed out of 200 dollars. I sent the payment and he hung of the phone and disconnected it. I called paypal and he didn't have a bank account linked to it so all I got was 13 dollars back.

I faced a simmilar case six months back.

A guy contacted me over phone and wanted to buy all my templates on my template website. I was overwhelmed. He did a bit of negotiations and we finalized a price.

He immediately sent me the money as well in Pay Pal. The moment i received around $4600 (yes that was a huge sum), I started uploading all the templates on the server (since i do not provide auto download).

Luckily that night he could not download the files, due to some technical problems. Next day when i woke up, again luckily i checked my Pay Pal account and saw the same dreaded message. I immediately deleted the files from the server and saved my templates from this guy.

This may be the same guy using different names.

People selling designs must be aware of this guy.
