How many websites can a Raq 3 and a Rac 4 handle?
![]() | View Full Version : Server Question wpayton71 02-04-2002, 03:56 PM How many websites can a Raq 3 and a Rac 4 handle? Softerweb 02-04-2002, 04:03 PM I think there is a hard coded limit of aprox. 200-250 on the Raq4i, sorry I don`t remember exactly. In any event you should try to keep the number of sites as low as possible, ofcourse considering the average amount of traffic, server load etc for each site. I would say 50-100 sites are good numbers. Matt2001 02-04-2002, 04:24 PM Softerweb, Is 50-100 sites seriously all that a Raq4i can hold? Seems to me that it wouldn't be worth bothering with it. I'm not familiar at all with the Raq's. Are they quite stable, and easy to manage? Is that why so many people are using them? Just wondering cperciva 02-04-2002, 04:31 PM Why do people use iMacs? Because they're cute and have a big marketing campaign behind them. The same applies pretty accurately to Raqs. Few people, if they know enough to be able to use anything else, will choose to use a Raq, but there's an awful lot of people who don't know what they are doing and find the "friendly face" of the Raq to be quite appealing. Softerweb 02-04-2002, 04:38 PM They can handle more then 100, no question about that. It completely depends on the sites that are hosted on the server. If one site serves 100.000 page views per day, with some heavy scripts, then theres not much "room", if any, for other clients/sites. 150-200 small sites serving static pages should be ok. wpayton71 02-04-2002, 05:04 PM Your right about the these servers, they do have a happy appeal to them. I really dont like them tho, i kinda wana switch over to diffrent servers. What servers do you think are the best for webhosting these days? Matt2001 02-04-2002, 05:53 PM personally, i like building my own systems. I'd say your biggest concern is quality, fast memory, and fast hard drive. You can have all the processor you want, but if you run 128mb of ram, and use a 5400rpm hard drive, your server will still be slow. I use redhat, but i hear a lot of people talking about freebsd these days. I'm going to try it out soon. aplus 02-04-2002, 08:02 PM RaQs have a hard limit set in their software. In theory, a Linux server can handle thousands of web sites, as the operating system can really handle thousands of IP numbers. However, numbers don't help. It all depends on the server's power. If those 250 sites get 10 hits per day, then the server's power is wasted. But if just two sites get one hundred thousand visitors a day, believe me, the RaQ will shock. It's funny when web hosts advertise "we don't host more than 250 sites on a server to keep your site fast!". The truth is, they are using a RaQ server, or similar appliances which have such a limit. Besides, it's cheaper to put your own server together if you have the experience or know how. Peter :) Chicken 02-04-2002, 10:20 PM I think the limit you are talking about is IP-based sites, from what I remember. There may be a set limit for namebased sites, but I believe that's just a simple line in one of the config files. |
