View Full Version : New ubersmith reviews?
IntraHost 11-18-2004, 10:12 PM Anyone using ubersmith have any comments about it? I currently have a monthly license of lpanel which is 20/m and I have an owened version of modernbill we bought a while ago, but this new ubersmith looks like.
We haven't really settled into a billing system yet, although we have most of our customers in lpanel. Lpanel support is about a -2 on a 10 point scale right now, and so far ubersmith seems to be more responsive (although we haven't had any big issues).
We also have cerberus help desk for support, so we're a little warry of using ubersmith's help system because we love cerberus so much.
But is it worth 40/m (for life version) to move to ubersmith over lpanel and cerberus?
Thanks for your thoughts!
WII-Aaron 11-18-2004, 11:31 PM We currently use modernbill and as we grow we find it simply lacking for what we need. I've spent awhile on the Ubersmith demo checking things out and the reports it generates make much more sense. That, plus phone support make it worth the extra each month in my opinion.
I just ordered the pro version and hopefully will be up and running with it tomorrow. I intend to test it for awhile before making the final plunge but what I've seen in both the demo and the responsiveness to my questions (I called them and got ahold of two live people right away) it looks like the way to go.

mrzippy 11-19-2004, 03:18 AM I've been evaluating the www.ubersmith.com software a bit recently, too.
They just released their "new" LITE version, which is pretty decent.
The PRO version allows you to use the same billing system even if you have multiple "brands" and different websites.
That's very attractive to me, as I have several hosting websites and am getting tired of different billing databases for each one.
:)
I just wish there was an easy way to integrate cerberus helpdesk.

Hey there! I'm obviously a bit biased for part of that question, so I'm repeating "ethics" in my head as I post to see if I can give you some helpful feedback without any hype. ;)
We've used Ubersmith in parts of WebGroup Media for a couple years now. Back into our days of shared hosting, and to the current day for the couple hundred web sites we still host in addition to our software development projects.
I've posted praise for Ubersmith in this forum before, and I'd do the same today. I find a kindred spirit in their "functionality over flashiness" approach. It gets right to the point.
In several years we've probably had an outage of about 20 minutes of downtime in a single episode as they upgraded the server/network. It's been very reliable.
Nowadays we do most of our billing through Authorize.net's reoccuring billing and accounting. I don't see us moving the hosting billing any time soon, as Ubersmith's hosted solution provides exactly what we need.
Their support is good for the few times we've needed it. For a while we even had them sending us FTP backups nightly/weekly.
The downsides?
I think their standalone pricing is insane if you want to host the system yourself. The package tiering on the hosted version is fair to start with, though it escalates pretty quickly.
Their ticketing system (at least pre-5.0) is very weak. We reached that conclusion well before we even started developing Cerberus Helpdesk as a small hosting company. It's one major reason we decided to start our project.
The conclusion?
I can ensure you that Ubersmith knows their focus is hosting a professional and reliable billing system for web hosts. They do that very well.
If you've already decided against the initial Modernbill-type "wow" factor, I'd say Ubersmith is a good fit. It's organized and self-explanatory.
I just wish there was an easy way to integrate cerberus helpdesk.
That's already 2 people in 3 posts. ;)
The one issue I've had with Ubersmith is most people host it on their server without access to the files or database. That makes integration incredibly difficult.
They've been asking us to try 5.0, I'll have to give it a shot and get back to you guys about our prospects for integration.
Thanks!
Jay H 11-19-2004, 03:50 PM Ubersmith is a wonderful software. I've had an Ubersmith license for over a year, testing it every once in awhile when I get a chance.
We currently utilize Modernbill, however, it just isn't *right* for our operations.
Ubersmith has the functionality we need along with great technical support, on a personal level, with you. They will do their best to implement feature requests and any custom needs you may have.
The main thing I'm waiting for from them before I attempt to finally complete the switchover is PayPal support, once they add that functionality, I'm going to be Uber. :P
fastdatasvr 11-23-2004, 02:05 PM We have had Ubersmith (they host it for us) for about 3 years. We have used it as our primary and only billing system since we got it. It has worked flawlessly for us and support (Boo and team) have been great with everything, including implementing features when we requested them.
I asked them to upgrade us to the new version last week and now it is an even nicer system to use. It does integrate some with cpanel, but IMO it is a nice billing system for anyone who does any type of recurring invoicing who needs an online billing system when end users can mange their own account.
You even get your own included server monitor with it. We have all of our servers monitored on several ports VIA this system and it notifies us on intervals we set.
There is a learning curve with every billing system and moving to another one is NOT an easy task. If you are going to choose, do your homework, make sure it is a secure and sound solution or you will pay later.

PayPal functionality has now been added to ubersmith. I was just wondering if you've had a chance to retest and see what is your opinion?

Hi mrzippy,
No I haven't as of yet, although, as soon as I do, I'll post an update to this thread with any further review information I may have.

As a coustomer of mesopia ModernBill is ok sometimes it acts a bit funny but this ubersmith software looks really cool.
