View Full Version : Reselling space vs. plans?
Fastman 02-04-2002, 09:09 AM Which companies offer resellers the ability to resell their own space, as opposed to reselling the company's stock plans? Many companies such as VenturesOnline just have you resell their plans, which I don't like (it strikes me as more of an affiliate deal, where you get stuck with support). I know SplashHost and McHost let you resell your space, but are their any other choices like/besides them?
Everyday 02-04-2002, 11:02 AM There are many other choices that offer reseller hosting in the fashion you want it. Basically you're looking for someone that offers Virtual Private Servers. That is the most common way to resell space and not plans.
Fastman 02-04-2002, 06:58 PM So you would classify McHost and SplashHost's Reseller plans as Virtual Private Servers? I've not heard of them referred to in that way before, but I may have been snozzing during that class!:cartman:
So who else fits into that category? I don't seem to recall coming across others in here but again...:cartman:
Alan - Vox 02-04-2002, 07:22 PM Virtual Private Servers are not what hes after, there is a big difference between a reseller pland and a virtual dedicated server. Make sure you chose the right one for your needs.
Everyday 02-04-2002, 07:41 PM How do you allot 1 or 2 gigs to a customer and give them the ability to create, delete or alter customers sites then? What type of platform are you running?

The way that those reseller plans work is the following:
You signup for one large account (ie. 1GB Space and 12GB Transfer)
You create your clients' accounts and hosted them all under the same space and bandwidth
You basically control how much disk space and bandwidth, pop3 accounts, ftp accounts, etc. you give each client.
:)
Everyday 02-04-2002, 08:14 PM Well it is VERY similar other than the fact that you set it up as a shared account that is resold and we sell it as a VPS. I'm sure they each have their pluses and minuses.

Are you looking for resellers offering reselling?
Fastman 02-06-2002, 09:32 AM I'm not sure that I'd want to go that route as it seems you'd be too far removed, having to depend on a reseller for support (who in turn has to rely on the seller). Plus, I'm not sure they'd be able to compete on price, but I could be wrong.
But back to my original question: Who offers plans where (as Kiwi described) you buy space and sell it as you see fit? (not VPS)
Are McHost and SplashHost the only ones?

No, these websites offer what mchost and splash offer:
Voxtreme.com
Ecommercediscovery.com
Dixiesys.com
Datahosts.net
Cyberwings.com
Dont forget, somehow they all are resellers (most hosting companies resell bandwith bought from ISPs) and also I dont know how many of them has direct access to the hardware :)
Fastman 02-06-2002, 10:07 AM Do you mean physically/geographically having access to the hardware? I suppose that unless they happen to be located in the same city as their NOC, they would have to depend on a third party to keep their server running. I think that is probably the norm, but I'd like to learn more about how that works.
Everyday 02-06-2002, 10:18 AM There is nothing wrong with a VPS. In our opinion its actually better since you are guaranteed a certain amount of the system resources.
None of our resellers have had any complaints :)
