Hi,

I am looking for a dedicated server that costs $99 or less.... <g>

Here's the features I want:
- php4 and mysql 2.3x
- ssh / telnet access
- ability to host other sites, e.g. becoming a web host
- preferably with some control panel to make normal routines easy.
- can give control panel facility to customers too
- low bandwidth only... perpahs 10 gb/mo or less is enough
- prefer 64mb

Am I asking too much? Anything there that can cater for this? I have searched some.. so far only atju<something> fulfils the price req but I have my doubts... also its $99 package seems to be just a 'lure' as their other packages are a lot more expensive.

I'd appreciate any comments / suggestions or pointers.

I've made a global search. So far I did not find any.

BTW all atjeu servers have a $200 one time only setup fee. :(

http://www.server4me.com does offer a $49 a month server. With 10 Gig it would be $99 a month. I have never used their services so I cann't tell you if they are good or not. Search around for opinions on them.

But what good would 10 Gig be to a web host? The average web site uses 350 megs per month. This means you can host about 28 sites on the server and stay within the 10 gig limit. This means you are paying a bit over $3.50 per account. You can do better reselling, or if you want more freedom by purchasing a bulk chunk and slice it your way.

And tera-byte offered some sort of x-mas special (see advertsing forum). Not sure it would have 64MB ram though, but yeah, the GB is a bit low. I suppose you'll get more money, but it will be expensive for you to go with any sort of 10GB plan. At least be sure you can upgrade something like that easily to something you can afford (and that the per/Gb fee is reasonable).

Problem with most $99 is they only use RAQ3 which only has PHP3.

Some of my php scripts do need php4 functions.

Also what do you mean by 10GB? It is too much for the price I am asking?

I'd imagine you can up the server to php4, (note that RaQs do not come with *any* form of php installed by default). Also as Wazeh mentioned, you said you were looking for a plan with about 10 gigs/mo, and he explained that would only cover about 28 sites. It could *in theory* only cover less than one site. Point is, you can usually get a better bigger deal (one that won't kill you once you go over the 10 Gbs). Some more Gbs 'included' if you will, for a lower monthly fee than if you had to pay per Gb over 10.

You are saying that with $3.5 ($99 / 28) I can do better reselling instead?

So far I haven't found any reselling package less than $9/month.... they are all very pricey. Thanks I now understand the bandwidth calc thing. So 10 GB is not much...

Any suggestions?

Also this is another topic.. but how can I accept credit card on my site? I am not in USA. Thanks.. I am so newbie in this.

actually, server4me offers a bad deal if you think about it. although the account costs you $3.5, this is just the "bandwidth" cost. They charge you additional $2 per IP number, so your cost now jumped to $5.50. Add all the setup charges they have and you will be paying much more than you would with other companies. server4me is a good deal for very limited applications, but web hosting is not one of them. If you insist on a dedicated server (assuming you are techincally capable of keeping it running) you are better of going with one of the established companies like VDI. Unfortunatly they have increased their prices recently, but they did add more bandwidth... you can get a server with 100GB for about $600 a month.

With reselling you CAN get cheaper rates, you just have to look around and compare. Look for hidden values. Or if you want real control over what plans to offer and how to go about offering them, go with bulk reselling.

If you need additional help, feel free to email me on my email address below. Good luck.

Correction from Chicken's post;
"note that RaQs do not come with *any* form of php installed by default"

The RAQ4 series has PHP4 installed.

Thanks grizz for that correction. Yes, I meant RaQ3 or lower.
