View Full Version : Something must be corrupted

I picked up a server a few days ago with 800 mhz processor, 256mb RAM, and a 20 GB hard drive.

The first day I logged in via SSH, server load was sittting at .7, with absolutely nothing except redhat running. After working a bit in webmin, I saw serverload start jutting to around 5.7 or so for periods of around 10 minutes or so, but then eventually returning to the sub one range (which was still on the high side).

Eventually, just watching the SSH screen, the server load shot up to 20, still with absolutely nothing being done to it. Swap memory was being utilized, and I was barely able to use the reboot command before the server slowed so much I wouldn't be able to type into SSH any commands.

When it rebooted, it seemed to be running fine... for about 3 hours. Still with no traffic or scripts running, the swap memory began being used, and server load was around 1 or so. The tech said redhat linux was messed up so he reinstalled.

I was gone for a few hours after he said this, and when I came back the server had crashed again. He rebooted it and when I used SSH to get in and ran a top, the RAM was again completely used and swap memory was being used. Again with no traffic. Server load now stays around .5-.7 before it crashes.

I uninstalled webmin and everything, and the server continues to crash, it's not even up now. I can ping the server, but cannot get in via http, SSH, and before uninstallation of webmin, I couldn't get in there either. It still responds to pings though, everytime it goes down.

I'm thinking something must be corrupt for the server to keep crashing by itself. Does anyone have any advice?

Server utilization is always at least 75% idle.

Sounds more like a hardware issue.

That's what I was thinking...

Do you think it's more likely a corrupted hard drive or something else?

contact your host and ask 'em to check out your server, replace any parts if they have to...:)
