View Full Version : Hosting a ******** Domain

OK, I have been told it's not possible to sign up for a hosting plan with a ******** domain name.

Is that true? In the CJB Control Panel, there is an option to specify a nameserver, so it means that I can use a ******** subdomain just like a domain name, doesn't it?

Anyway, if you have access to the DNS records of a domain, you can always point a subdomain of this domain to a specific host, so why shouldn't this apply to CJB (since they allow you to specify a nameserver)?

If you're want to move to paid web hosting, then what's the big deal, just get a domain, they can't be purchased for under $10/year these days.

That doesn't answer my question!

I already know that I can buy a domain name, want I want to know is if I can host a CJB subdomain.

I don't think you can, and I don't think any host would let you even if you could.

If this is the case, I don't see why you couldn't get a ******** subdomain hosted normally. At any rate, you could ask a host to set up an account for you in the format of subdomain.hostingco.com, and than you could point your ******** domain name at that.

But as a few people have already said, with the low cost of domain names today, why don't you just reigster a .COM name instead?

Ok, the reason why I don't want to register a domain name, is that this "project" will only last another few months, so I don't want to register a domain name for that short a period of time.

I myself think it is possible, but my host has said no. I don't think they understand that CJB allow you to specify a nameserver for the domain, even though I have already told them that. If anyone else thinks it is possible, please reply.

My host also cannot/doesn't want to provide me with a subdomain.

You would need to specify two nameservers, not one. And if it is just a few month project and then it is over, why don't you just look for a good quality free host. Try http://www.spaceports.com/.

OK, thanks for all your help, it is now working, with only ONE nameserver.

My host contacted me, setup the account, and gave me the corresponding IP for the server. Sure enough, it worked!

Well, I have no idea how that worked.

I don't see why it wouldn't work.

It's just like a normal domain name: I can point it's nameserver to anything I want.

You could just set up the domain as it is on your server and have the ******** address pointed at an IP address. Its simple enough to add.

That's basically the way it is now, and it's working :).
