View Full Version : VPS - Cpanel or Plesk?
Techno 11-14-2004, 02:05 PM | I am considering moving my domains from a multi-domain cpanel plan to a VPS. Price, space and performace are obviously considerations but what about cpanel vs plesk? |
hmm.. me my favorite is DirectAdmin.. simple and easy to use ! its a powerfull panel! i recommand it !

submenu 11-14-2004, 04:58 PM | Well if you are used to Cpanel, I would go with Cpanel. Virtuozzo Power Panel with Plesk on a VPS is slick. I've used both Cpanel and Plesk on VPS before and both are very nice. Cpanel takes a lot more initial setup once you get access to your VPS however. Its like setting up your own dedicated server. Plesk doesn't have as many options or configuration settings, so its a little easier to get started with initially. |
minsight 11-14-2004, 07:46 PM I'd have to second the recommendation for DirectAdmin. My DA-VPS runs very well. I've heard complaints about security with CPanel. I've also heard that DirectAdmin doesn't insinuate itself so completely into your system.
Of course, each panel will have its cheerleaders. They people you should listen to are those who have installation, maintenance and administration experience with the various panels. If you search the archives of this forum, you'll find what they have to say (to back up what I've tried to summarize above). |
BF-Gary 11-15-2004, 01:53 AM If you have customers that are already using cPanel it might be hard to move them to Plesk. There is an import tool with cPanel 2 cPanel that you can use to make your transfer easier too. |
The Broadband Man 11-15-2004, 02:56 AM go with CPANEL - i hate plesk |
Qarce.Com 11-15-2004, 04:54 AM cPanel is much easier to use for they are user-friendly.Plesk appears to be much more confusing. |
Roy@ENHOST 11-15-2004, 09:48 AM Well I think that Cpanel is more confusing.
They dumped the icons on the main screen. Beginners are going to have a hard time navigating. The iconic theme that was obsolete was iconically much better oganized.

BF-Gary 11-15-2004, 12:46 PM Well there are other themes that do not use the dumped icons on the screen like bluelagoon. |
bunder 11-15-2004, 02:25 PM Also, doesn't Fantastico only come with cPanel. I know plesk has something simillar, but Fantastico has many more application which you can install easily.
cheers

And because of _YOUR_HATE_ people need make decisions? Common... _I_ hate cPanel, but I'll never use this as an argument when I recommend (or not) control panel to the people.
In my opinion, CPanel has one VERY (and that's VERY) bad 'feature'. It uses mbox mailstoring format. There's no possibility to hack it so it'll use maildir. Unlike DirectAdmin. :)
My kudos to HSphere!!! |
Steven 11-15-2004, 10:04 PM CPanel is a bloated piece of crap. The addon modules are a joke. They work half way most of the time, and dont even think about uninstalling. Time after time people come to me with broken installations because they installed all the modules and then removed them. *shrugs*. I would take a plesk box any day over a cpanel box. Plesk in my opinion is a quality control panel. Its pretty stable aswell. You know all those updates that break stuff in cpanel? I have yet to see that happen on a directadmin box. Their updates just WORK. No ifss about it. The build script for apache is awesome aswell, easily customizable. |
Go with CPanel, Plesk doesn't even come close in terms of interface or features. |
The Broadband Man 11-15-2004, 10:38 PM HSphere is awesome - very limited to OS |
meknow 11-15-2004, 10:39 PM Nothing perfect anyway. Choose you are more familiar. But if there is choice, go with plesk ( better with DA but wasn't asked.)
Easy to use or feature etc.... does not complimise all the bug if the system failing...due to it. |

Well, yeah. "Interface and features"... :o Nice icons...
We're talking overloaded servers, non working updates and non existant uninstalls here...
Look above for TheLinuxGuy post - he knows quite more than all of us combined. ;) |
Roy@ENHOST 11-15-2004, 11:05 PM But customers ask for cPanel, we give them cPanel.
No use going against the market demand.
The best control panel might not be the one that dominates the market just like the best candidate might not be the one that wins the presidential election. |

Customers??? Them again???!!! How long they're going to dominate our lives??? Oh... Life would be so much easier without them... :D |
Techno 11-16-2004, 01:59 AM Ok, thanks, based on my cpanel experience, reading threads & looking at demos I think I'll find a host with DirectAdmin or 2nd choice plesk. |
RossMAN 11-16-2004, 02:00 AM DirectAdmin with Installatron > cPanel with Fantastico
Not to mention less bloat, loopholes like swiss cheese, etc. |
Roy@ENHOST 11-16-2004, 02:03 AM Features = bloat
But features sell.:D
So gotta put up with the bloat.

From a support point of view DA/Plesk is much better in terms of tickets but people do want C-Panel and a majority of our customers are running it. Really if you could afford it why not get a couple of servers with each on just to try it out

ImaNewb 11-20-2004, 01:49 PM I have both Plesk and Cpanel.
I prefer Plesk over Cpanel - more secure - friendly interface
- HOWEVER -
I will setting up DirectAdmin in the future. It would be my 1st preference. |
dkitchen 11-20-2004, 01:54 PM How much RAM do you intend to have on this VPS?
This would influence my choice of panel, plesk seems to cope with smaller amounts of ram better, however i'd prefer cPanel for anything with 128MB and up.
