Why? hcn 11-14-2004, 01:52 AM I was visiting whois.sc, and I found a domain registered under my name: my phone number, name, and address. I dont own the domain. Why would anybody do that? JSpired 11-14-2004, 01:53 AM OK, that's weird! Can't answer why someone would do this, but I'd contact the registrar and let them know about it. Out of curiosity, by the way, how did you find this out? WebAuth 11-14-2004, 02:01 AM You probably were computing in your sleep :-) Master1980 11-14-2004, 02:03 AM This may be fraud. They used the billing information for the domain name itself Master1980 11-14-2004, 02:05 AM Check your bank statement as soon as possible. hcn 11-14-2004, 02:09 AM I found out by chance; I was looking for hosting related domains. I visited the domain. Appears that the domain is owned by a hosting company. I will contact them but I dont think this is fraud. Master1980 11-14-2004, 02:13 AM well there is a little chance that someone is preparing a gift for you for Christmas :) Master1980 11-14-2004, 02:15 AM in every case - contact the registrar and explain them the situation. Someone may start "fishing" or create an illegal site with this domain JSpired 11-14-2004, 02:19 AM Originally posted by hcn I found out by chance; I was looking for hosting related domains. Well, I'm not sure exactly what to call it, but if you didn't order it and it's registered with your name and address it does appear to be fraudulent to me. Whatever happens, best of luck! hcn 11-14-2004, 02:21 AM Originally posted by Master1980 in every case - contact the registrar and explain them the situation. Master1980 11-14-2004, 02:57 AM if it is under his e-mail address he can always take control over the domain. Just contacting the provider webhostec 11-14-2004, 03:38 AM yea you can take control over this domain if it is under your name. It is very good that you have informed the registrar about the situation because if the domain is used for illegal web sites you can have problems. Make sure it is not a fraud! mdadnan 11-14-2004, 04:33 AM You should have it corrected immediately because webhost can be a defaulter or with a scam site. webhostec 11-14-2004, 04:56 AM if he contact the registrar immediately there won't be any legal action. He need to keep copy of the e-mail as a proof mj4589 11-14-2004, 09:06 AM How would you just happen to whois a domain and it has your info on it? Sounds like bs. mewcat 11-14-2004, 10:32 AM Not always though, i found few spamming domains and looked at their whois, was surprised to see admin email address belonged to me. I thought of teaching them a lesson by getting password from Registrar and changing the DNS. But it was under Enom and had to contact Enom's reseller, after that found out that Enom's reseller had different emailid in their file and send the password to it :P Originally posted by Master1980 if it is under his e-mail address he can always take control over the domain. Just contacting the provider sightz 11-14-2004, 11:00 AM Most registrars have a procedure to regain control of a domain for which your contact email has changed. Usually a paper form you mail or fax them. Since the domain is registered in your name, it's yours. Consider it a gift from the idiot spammers/scammers who regged it. Send in the change of email form to the registrar and thank the spammers for being so stupid. Gen-T 11-14-2004, 03:14 PM Very odd indeed, and rather disturbing if true. Are you absolutely sure? Have you checked again today? Do you happen to own any other extensions of the same name? Care to share the name? Is it live? Pointed to the hosting company you referred to? hcn 11-14-2004, 03:32 PM Here is the response that I received from namecheap. "We have emailed and asked the person that purchased the domain with us to update the information to reflect his own as soon as possible." |
