View Full Version : How long does it take to activate a domain?

Yesterday I registered three domains with *gasp* yes... APlus.net

I guess I should have read about them on WHT before I blindly went with them as a registrar... but anway

They wanted me to call them and all sorts of crap just to get the payment through. I had to contact support a few times.

I finally got the confirmation e-mail that my domains have been registered, but when I check on whois.sc today and they still appear to have no WHOIS record.

Now, I haven't registered a domain in a while... but I have a feeling it never took this long to update the WHOIS database before

Is it always this slow or did I just choose a really crappy registrar?

It should show up within about 12 hours (whois only updates twice a day, or at least it used to, may of changed). Then for DNS updates mosts ISPs are updated at max 72 hours.

Depends on the registrar.. what are the domains?

It usually takes 12 - 24 hours for me through namecheap.com and has never been more than 72 hours. I have actually sent ICANN the topics about aplus.net calling people right after they register a domain. It seems ICANN has forwarded it to their legal department and will be investigating the matter soon enough.

All 3 show as available, however when I go to them I am actually taken to a folder which means my ISP at least has records for them.

The WHOIS hasn't updated yet, but the domains have been registered and cannot be registered again.

I'm not sure who APLUS uses, but with Enom, it takes 24 hours (even 20) for the domain to work and about 8-10 hours for it to show up in the whois database.

They end at http://abac.com/

they say they need to "confirm" your payment information

none of the other registrars have ever done that to me

I ended up having to call them just so the payment would go through

So at about midnight last night or today rather... the payment went through

Well... I'll just wait and see what happens

It's hilarious how aplus.net tries to sell you stuff when you contact support "who's designing your site" and "we can give you a good deal on hosting"

thanks but no thanks... lol

whois.sc stores a cache of the record that was returned. Try running a whois query on internic or something.

I use GoDaddy -- before it used to take a while... but surprisingly, everytime I purchase a new domain I can start using it within minutes... at least on my server, and on my ISP (both have different geographical locations). I'm not sure if it's accessible by everyone else... but it appears to be anyway.

I use eNom and have my domains up and running minutes after I register them.

How do you mean up and running? If you mean that you can then start to edit the DNS etc then thats just part of the registrars site. There's no way that the domains themselves will start to resolve for people within just a few minutes.

Yes, with the new Rapid DNS I have had sites resolving very fast (had one the other day that was resolving for me in half an hour) vice days prior to Rapid DNS.

I haven't checked actual time hacks but I registered a .com less than two hours ago and my site is up as we type.

No. Domains can resolve and be usable in under 10 minutes now.

"Rapid DNS" sounds amazing. What has turned me off about making and deploying new sites in mass production is the speed of the domain resolution. By the time the domains resolve, I am usually starting a new project, if I haven't finished one already. :P

Yes, the new Rapid DNS has been a welcome enhancement for both registrars and hosts, no more 48 - 72 hour wait. Our clients have loved it, everything ready within 15 min is what many of them expected in the first place...

I want to go and register a domain now just to test it out! Have been registering domains all week but don't normally visit them once they are set up.

whoa... that rapid dns sounds cool

I can assure you that aplus.net is not using it... lol

*waits some more*

Domains can be registered and up and fully resolving in 5 minutes now, we can literally have a customer's domains up and running before they leave our premises. This all changed a few months ago - no more 24 hour wait for things to change!

Puts a whole new face on being a webhoster - all sorts of new things are possible!

Just the other day, I registered a domain, went to set up the addon domain, and before I could ftp the files, the domain was already active.

I had a domain set up as soon as I checked the site, it was probably less than 5 mins, I didn't check .. this was using a seller that already has my detaild & using my own nameservers.
