View Full Version : (Projected) Size of Web Hosting Industry?
Boksoft 11-26-2000, 02:54 PM Good afternoon!
Does anyone know where I can information about the (projected) size of the web hosting industry?
I have read some reports on this some time ago, however I cannot find them anymore :(
If anyone knows, let me know!

etLux 11-28-2000, 10:03 AM The last I heard, there were an estimated 1.2 billion sites on the 'Net.
I've heard all manner of whacky growth figures, ranging from negative numbers to 50% a year -- absolutely all of which figures can be taken with a liberal toss of salt.
I do think, though, that growth will remain strong and healthy for years; and that those who have the foresight to cater to European markets in the nearer term will do very well.
kunal 01-04-2001, 07:07 AM Well this quiet an interesting topic. On what basis do they shoot the figures out? Considering that allmost all the .com and .net domains have been used? I mean, how can one project something like this?
etLux 01-04-2001, 07:16 AM Kunal, I honestly have no idea.
But I've seen figures severally ranging from 1.2 to 1.5 billion web sites.
One would assume that this includes personal sites...?
I will try to find some of the links where I've seen the numbers.
Personally, to me, they do not make that much sense.
kunal 01-04-2001, 08:42 AM Happy hunting :) I am gonna do some of my own hunting to.. How can they include personal sites? I mean, think of it, how many websites does geocities and tripod host? How many are really active? Its freakin weird!
Boksoft 01-05-2001, 11:15 AM Afternoon all,
I finally found some reports, it was easier to get than I though, guess I overlooked it the first time. It's at Forrester Research:
Hosting's moving on up:
( May 2000: US Web-hosting revenue will reach $19.8 billion in 2004, up from $1.4 billion in 1999. Users' drive toward high-end eCommerce sites coupled with vendors' focus on Web solutions puts hosting on a path to the stars )

Sizing App Hosting:
( December 1999: Incomplete supplier offerings and user confusion have stalled the apps hosting market. But new delivery models will force a market restructuring, driving the market to $11.3 billion by 2003.)

The first article I mentioned is very interesting.
Happy reading :)

CRego3D 01-05-2001, 12:17 PM humm, nice articles .. thank for the links
etLux 01-05-2001, 04:12 PM Thanks, Boksoft!
Very interesting articles!
kunal 01-05-2001, 04:17 PM That was some interesting reading after a long long time :D
KDAWebServices 01-07-2001, 06:57 PM Well if you are to believe Alabanza then the hosting industry is growing by $16m a day.
Boksoft 01-08-2001, 05:50 AM That would mean a growth of approx. $5.8 Billion a year. That seems a bit on the high side of the projections. They probably calculated that in the first quarter of 2000 when the economy was still booming.
But it's a nice slogan to get more clients.
marksy 01-09-2001, 06:13 PM I wouldn't believe it just because they said it.
CRego3D 01-09-2001, 10:50 PM Hummm .. 16 Mil a day ... that means we are getting 0.000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000001% of the cake ...
Hehe :D
dektong 01-10-2001, 09:40 PM whoa Carlos, how much money do you make a day? Even $1.6/day revenue means about 0.00001%..... So you don't even make 1.6 cents/day?
he..he..he.. :)
cheers,
Object 10-21-2003, 05:41 PM Could something like this ever really be calculated....
It's like counting all the different types of grasses, in your entire neighboorhood, individually... plant by plant, as for resellers... that'd be the centipede grass.
i'm prolly a weed somewhere in someones backyard, under their shed....
my_forum_id 10-21-2003, 06:02 PM 1.2 - 1.5 billion sites ?
Doesn't seem at all likely, there's 6 billion odd people in the world :
3 billion live in abject poverty and have never heard of a web site never mind used one.
A further billion or so live borderline and are very unlikely to be involved.
From the 2 billion that are left maybe 20% are too young or too old.
From the 1.6 billion that are left over 25% of people in 'civilised' countries are still completely computer illiterate.
So that leaves approx 1.2 billion people for 1.2 to 1.5 billion sites - or one each, that seems pretty unlikely (and I haven't even counted in people that have disabilities or illnesses tht would preclude them for being likely to be involved).
Maybe 1.2 - 1.5 billion PAGES on the web but no way that many sites (?)
Object 10-21-2003, 07:16 PM ...agree's with my_forum_id...
only...

ozzie123 10-22-2003, 04:05 AM LOL, I don't think these things can be calculated.
