View Full Version : Online Site Builder?
Hi, i'm looking for some advice, and a few different veiwpoints on this. I was tossing around the idea of using Psoft's site studio for an online site builder, and have the "sitebuilder enabled" plans for an extra $2-5.00 per month, and if it works out right, I might make it free all together. It's not too much to get, however I have no idea how it gets installed, and it seems a bit like a resource hog.
Anyway, your thoughts and opinions, please.
Thanks,
Josh
hostseeker 11-14-2004, 03:59 PM You can pay psoft $75 to install it, that's what I did.
As far as using resources, I haven't yet had a problem, althought I am still a new user. My server has 1GB of RAM on a 2.8P4.
Most hosts do not charge extra for SiteStudio, but use it to attract new customers.

I have a problem with any company charging a "per customer" fee for the use of their software. I think it is an arrogant pricing model, to assume that any company deserves a per user fee for using their product.
That is my opinion about PSoft.
mattwade 11-14-2004, 10:08 PM I don't charge users extra to use Site Studio. The license costs to me are so small, it seems silly to do it.
Installing it was a breeze. Just follow the instructions they have on their site.
I haven't noticed it hogging resources. I do have it running on a box that is not used for hosting customers, though I do host several large web sites of my own on it. Loads on the box never go above .10, except when I have some massive index rebuilds going on, but that isn't the fault of Site Studio....

Whats wrong with a per-user fee? Most software comes with a per-computer fee (commercial software).
I assume you prefer the pricing model of other control panel providers that charge $600+ per server with unlimited users/domains, thus encouraging hosts to oversell in order to drive their licensing per user cost lower to increase profits. With a fixed per user cost for licensing, there is less incentive to oversell (from a licensing standpoint)

The problem I have with "per-user" fees is that I feel that the third party company does not deserve to benefit from the success of another business by getting a "piece-of-the-action" from the purchaser. Isn't that what it is at its core? A third party software vendor who benefits from your success? It is not their place to charge in that manner, in my opinion. They should charge a flat rate for their software as it does not use their resources... regardless if you have 10 customers or 1000 customers.
Walter 11-16-2004, 11:12 AM "per user" is a very common licensing model, making expensive software available for small companies.
If you have 10 customers you pay a small fee, if you have 1000 customers or more you should be able to pay such a small fee with ease.

I agree, just because it's on *NIX doesn't mean that the software companies can't make money on it. Economies of scale, meaning bulk liscenses usually cost less.
