How much do it cost to build a REAL own webhosting company? What do I need (router, servers, backbone, technician stuff,...)?
Anyone knows it?
Thanks a lot

Thanks a lot Chicken 11-26-2000, 02:32 PM Post your budget and we'll tell you if you're close :) JTY 11-26-2000, 06:43 PM Well if you're thinking with your own network, then it's going to be very costly. Paul_Szymanski 11-26-2000, 09:51 PM As most of the regulars here will attest, it is usually easiest to start as a reseller. Slowly you will gain the knowledge necessary to run your own dedicated box. Then as your customer base increases you can move to dedicated boxes. Move to your own NOC when your profits are much higher and you have the experience and patience needed. cahostnet 11-26-2000, 10:11 PM I will definately reccomend going with co-location or leasing your server. Building an infrastructure for web hosting is going to cost you thousands and much more when you starting looking into hiring people to support it. As someone who has built multiple, I'll say go with the above reccomendation. But post your budget and we'll see if you have the right idea or not. Tyme 11-26-2000, 11:06 PM This depends completely on your knowledge of servers and software and how much money you have to spend. If you have little or no knowledge, start as a reseller, even if you do have the money to get your own server. Nothing is worse than a host that has no clue what they are doing. If you can afford it and have the knowledge, then lease a server or co-locate. If you do a search on this topic, you will find many posts on this subject. If you give us an idea of your background and you budget, you will get a better response. :) cbaker17 11-27-2000, 01:18 AM Startup For basic equipment startup your looking at around $25,000.00 for servers, racks, switches, routers, etc etc You should look at paying basic admins at between 10-20.00 a hour. Of course then your monthly costs will be about 1000.00 for T1 line rentals and thousands more a month for a T3.... And if thats not enough you have to find a decnet facility which will again cost you thousands more a month. KDAWebServices 11-27-2000, 10:41 AM Well a web hosting company in the UK just built it's own NOC for a million british pounds ($1.4m) and most other web hosts in the UKK just laughed because we all know that in the UK a decent Cisco routers costs £45,000 also they have laughable bandwidth - an 8mbps line, plus three 2mbs lines which they claim is extremly fast, it maybe is but not for 25,000 sites. So the answer is start with a leased box (co-located if you have the knowledge) and move on from there. |
