Hello,

I'm trying to get Linux installed on a friend's 486 computer..although it can't see the CD rom drive that it has - it's probably several years old - are there any good resources for finding very old drivers for Linux?

It's a Creative SoundBlaster CR-563-B and it was manufactured in 1994 - so it's really old..and I don't know if it will even be possible to get this installed. I have no other options such as temporarily replacing the cd rom drive, or installing over a network...

Thanks..

Is it hooked to a Creative Soundblaster card? If so, I believe it would be supported with the standard linux kernel. However, since so few people have/use such old devices, I'm guessing that whatever flavour of linux you're installing doesn't have support for this type of device compiled into their install kernel. Unless you dan find a distro that does, or that provides a loadable module for you, you're SOL unless you're going to build your own install disk.

As a suggestion, can you lend your friend a hard drive? If so, you could put an install image on the hard drive, and install off that, then later compile Soundblaster CDROM support into the new kernel.

Don't know if this helps....
