I run a forum and website on Aletia. I just really don't trust their bandwidth stats anymore, so I must move my site. When i first moved my site/board to them in November, the control panel said I was using about 7 gigs of traffic for the month (I am allowed 10 gigs). Ok, in December It said I used about 12 gigs. Now, in January, it says Ive used 21 gigs! I DO NOT see how this is possible. At first they said there was a bug in the cpanel software, causing it to double the bandwidth. Now they say it's fine, but NOW I'm using 21 gigs!? And just a side not...through all these months, webalizer stats have always been consistant and have showed me using about 5-7 gigs per month. So who do I believe? I cant keep having my site shut down every month for over-usage. I would have no problem moving to another host, but it would be SOOOOO much easier if I knew exactly how much BW I really WAS using so I can find the best plan for my needs. Is there anyway for me to know for sure how much I am using? I really don't see how my site is using 21 gigs. Any why would webalizer say I am using 5-7 gigs? I'm really thinking about moving to Gearhost.

My first thought is that you should ask them to explain the difference between the two statistics. There may be a reason why there is so much disparity. For example, webalizer only tracks web site traffic, if you have unusually high amounts of FTP or mail traffic, that could explain the difference. I am not saying that is the case, but Aletia should have a pretty good grasp of your usage patterns, and hopefully can explain the differences.

Yea they also said it is from email and FTP. Now, I have ONE email address throguh them, and i get maybe 1-2 emails every other day. I don't think that adds up to much at all. FTP, well, I maybe uploaded 1 MB of files for the month. So I dont see how either of those could affect it.

In that case, I would ask them to show you FTP & POP logs that demonstrate the type of usage they are describing. Don't expect them to cut an paste their log files into an e-mail, but explain to them what you just said, and they should be bale to review their logs from the pop3 daemon over the last month and determine if what you are saying is true (of course if those 1 or 2 e-mails all contain 300 meg attachments, you are on your own :)).

LOL... no they are definately not 300 meg emails. Maybe 1-2 KBs.

Then definitely ask them to explain from where the bandwidth usage originated. If they are going to charge you, they have to be able to show that information.

My friend is with Aletia and has the same problem that Shibby has.
He also has a large difference between what Webalizer reports HTTP traffic as and what the control panel says his total traffic is. And like shibby, he hardly uses e-mail and FTP.

My friend is also getting tired of the "excessive bandwidth" messages without a proper explanation why.
