View Full Version : Good UK based LAMP virtual web host?

Hi All

I use WizardsHosting for most of my sites, and am very happy indeed with the service Carlos provides.

However, I need to host one of the sites on a virtual web host in the UK. Does anyone have any suggestions for a good UK web host running a LAMP (Linux/Apache/MySQL/PHP) setup comparable to the likes of WizardsHosting or VenturesOnline?

Cheers,

Mike Scott.

ok guys/girls hes been "bright" enough to en"light"en us on what LAMP means here, lets try and refrain from the LAMP associated jokes this time :-) and try to "illuminate" him with a constant "beam" of results he wants.

They may be ten a penny, but try doing a search to find them. You get such a mass of hits for all sorts of sites, it's difficult to find the web hosts among them. Can you suggest a set of search strings that will return mainly UK web hosts?

Secondly, I really need a recommendation for a GOOD web host. I spent some time researching before I chose WizardsHosting. In that time I discovered and indeed tried several LAMP hosts who were completely useless. I don't want to go through that pain again in finding a UK host!

xtstrike: yes, I tried to cut off the old LAMP jokes by explaining the acronym but it doesn't seem to have been entirely successful. :D

Try these search strings:

uk web hosting
web hosting UK
uk web host

You will need to sort out which ones are Windows and which are Linux.
Most will be Windows and most of those will be reselling for Fasthosts.

Gordon

Actually, go to a UK search engine and type in linux web host and linux web hosting as search strings and that might bring up more relevant results.

If using google or yahoo use search string like this
+uk +web +hosting
etc.

This will make sure your search results have UK in them.

EssEss: UK based server. It's needed to serve UK only customers so we want something in the UK for connection reliability and efficiency.

GordonH: I've done searches, but there are so many hits. It's not finding one that's a problem, it's finding a GOOD one. If I did a search for a US host, it would be very unlikely that I'd come upon WizardsHosting. In fact, I did try several other hosts before Wizards and it wasn't a pleasant experience.

Somebody surely can give me a recommendation?!!

I am also from the UK. We find that our servers (which are in the US) have a reliability equal to ones we have dealt with here. I really believe that you will not see any noticable difference in page loading speeds- you will also get a cheaper price too from servers in teh US.

Laughing Cow: you may well be right with reliability, but the more wire you've got between your server and your clients, the greater the chance of an outage. If there's a problem with the transatlantic connection, the UK servers will still be accessible in the UK.

I've been running various sites on US servers and reliability has been good, but occasionally something goes wrong at one of the transatlantic nodes. Also, round trip times are about 100ms faster to UK servers.

Try dsvr (http://www.dsvr.co.uk), I've got two servers with them, one (which they sponsor) is for http://lotterycentral.co.uk and one is for my other sites.

Please be aware though that they do sponsor my lottery site, that is the only connection I have to them, I chose to host my other sites with them after seeing how well the lottery server worked.
