I'm quite scared with 'Sale of WebHostingTalk'.

The main thing most people look at is to buy WHT and return their money by maximizing advertisement sales or even making WHT a paid service. I don't think WHT will benefit from such 'managers'.

I don't like an idea to give a try those experimentators.

I think that the main part of WHT success and popularity is how Matt managed it.

I just see that WHT is very attractive for advertisers.
Why not instead of selling WHT just make a long term arrangements with companies who would like to advertise on WHT. Give them significant discounts and get the cash he needs to pay his debts.

WHT proved to be a steady growing community and Matt is the main reason for it. I think such an investment in advertisement would be less risky than purchase of WHT.

Let's help Matt to sell ad space and will allow him to continue to do his excellent job.

A very good point - why 'sell' it, actually what is there to sell - it's only a public forum, and I mean that in the nicest possible way.

Matt doesn't want to do 'the job' anymore, hence the selling bit.

Obviously as a newbie here, I was under the impression that a forum runs itself, mostly, except of course with the generous interaction of the mods.

What about just 'passing it on' to a nominated member - I won't mention an obvious choice.

I know in the long run Matt would make a lot more off WHT then if he sold it. I think he should keep it make it a little more like sitepoint and sell ad's a little more.. Just an idea.. :)

Matt you don't need that BMW that bad do you.. hehe

Anyone think of this...

We as a member of WHT can appoint a person to run a donation to help Matt clear his debt so that Matt can continue to commit his work in WHT provided he wants to...

Think about how many members now in WHT? If a small percentage of members willing to donate just a dollar... Matt can pay his debt (depends on his debt amount of course) :D

Just my thoughts...

Choon

The way to make it more attractive to advertise on WHT is to frequent the advertiser's websites and purchase from them.

To support it's sponsors is to support WHT. If the ads are driving high quality traffic, they can be sold for more money, and Matt pays his debts...

(yes this is a self serving message as an advertiser - however it's the truth...)

From how i interpreted it, Matt has unfortunately grown bored of the forum and is looking for something maybe more challenging. He hasn’t really got the time to dedicate to it anymore and doesn’t want to see it drop its edge, thus has decided to sell it, i understand that he wants to use the money to pay his debts off but i think for him money is more the side issue. In the end of the day i don’t for a second think that matt would sell it to someone that didn’t want to continue it on as it is now. Maybe the idea of someone taking it over an d running it and all money going to matt, from advertising, is a good idea but only time will tell. But we don’t know how urgent these debts are ;)

Good Luck
Kindest Regards

I don't know about everyone else, but I have no objection to donating $1, $2, or even $5 to WHT.

Figure this, 9821 registered members. Taking a low estimate of 3% of the members donating $5, comes out to $1475 (295 members donating $5)

That should be plenty for a dedicated server. Even with just a $1 donation per person, that takes a big bite out of the costs.

If you are the type of person that wouldn't donate, please post here.....I'd like to know why....

I'm not going to knock this place as it does have its purpose, but as a high dollar sale I don't believe that will be so, and if it was it will be bought by a hosting company, so out the door goes the open forum concept.

The long and the short of it here is that if someone is concerned about this forum being sold they should try to offer up some form of competition of their own by starting their own board, at least that way if it was a private individual and not a hosting company that runs it, you would get a much more fair opinion of current hosts and offer.

Lets play devils advocate here for a moment so I can explain this further.

Lets say a company like ***** were to purchase this from it's current owner. Well as almost any thread here will tell you ***** is one of the biggest scam operations going. Now lets say they own it. They delete any negative postings about themselves, and even add a few positive locked threads to make themselves appear better then they are. The fill this board with their banner advertising to further enhance their image, and voila, they come off smelling rosier then they once did.

Now some might say this can't happen, but it can and will if sold. vBulletin has some unique features in their admin section that allows for the banning of certain words, so ***** for instance bans their name on it's own, and variations of it as well. They could build back their company by exploting this option.

My personal feeling is that anyone that buys this forum will need a bit of cash to do so, and the ones that it appeals to the most are the ones that have been stung by it, so it would no longer become a source of non-biased information.

For what it's worth. I won't be coming to read this board if it is sold, as the information will not be as open and honest.

Best to all.

The best way to make it more attractive to advertise on WHT is for the people at WHT to respond to advertising inquiries. :)

Matt does keep very strict rules on advertising. I think that's good, but at the same time, there seem to be too few advertisers at the moment so that ads are "over-exposed" to the same users. If money is a problem, he, or a future owner, could probably raise the advertising price by letting another dozen or so advertisers in to tone down this over-exposure.

All irrelevant in the sale talk though I suppose - Matt sounds like he's more interested in selling because he's exhausted with running the place.

it seems that advertising would be a good way to make money for wht or a yearly subscription for members maybe, i used to be sceptical about paying yearly subscriptions for net things but as this has become more common place i have started to pay subscriptions for many things.
This would need someone with a great deal of time and energy tho, maybe a couple of people so that it doesnt take up all of someones time and then maybe it wouldnt become so tiresome.
I havent been posting here long but i wouldnt like to see WHT disappear
