Hi,

I have been looking for some time now for a web hosting provider that has its datacenter/servers and of course internet connection located in either San Francisco or Los Angeles. So far, I've had no luck.

I am looking for both shared hosting and dedicated solutions from such a provider.

Why SF or LA? Well, here in the Philippines literally all ISPs have connections to the Internet backbone in the US via either LA or San Francisco, whether through fiber or satellite.

Can anybody direct me to any such hosts, if there are any. Hosting sites on such a provider would mean greatly improved access times for potential site visitors from the Philippines. On average most dial-up users get ping times / traceroute times of 500-700 ms (good ISP) to the west coast (LA, SF), if you are lucky. We use a already use an ADSL line (2mb/512k) and the best we've ever gotten was 200 ms.

Thanks in advance to those who can help me out.

Hi chicklet, and welcome aboard!

If you have a look at this thread : http://www.webhostlink.com/showthread.php?threadid=3151 you will find a pointer to a Yahoo category which will allow you to pinpoint Californian hosts.

However, a word of warning : as it's the 'entry point' for a lot of overseas traffic you'll find generally hosts will pay more to co-locate/host dedicated servers in that area, thus passing on the higher costs to their customers. It's something to consider when making your final decision.

Good luck!

Hi BC,

Thanks for the warm welcome and the info.

I'll check out the resource you gave and will bear in mind the points you stated, which i admit (now that you mentioned it) will most probably be the case.

I'll be sure to let you guys know what I come up with.

Also wanted to let you know that i've been following the forums here for sometime now and the info I get from the posts has really helped me find good hosts/companies to place web sites i develop for clients and for myself.

I glad there is a resource site such as this for web developers and anyone in general who is in need of hosting info.

thanks,
chicklet

Likewise, welcome, chicklet.

I recommend http://www.jtlnet.com they have servers out at Hurricane Electric in California and servers at VDI on the East coast. I have 2 sites with them and they have been nothing but good to me.

Keep in mind that a lot of hosts that list in the Yahoo California hosting area may not be hosting in California.

I for one, (and am not trying to be deceiving), am attempting to get listed in Yahoo for california hosts, because I am in california, and my business address of my office is in california, though Im reasonably assured that my actualy physical dedicated servers locations are NOT in california but rather in the midwest or eastcoast I can't remember anymore.

So, always ask the host when you have found someone listed on any site if their servers are truly located in Los angeles or San Fran.

It's weird but, My ex partner hosts with Alabanza and their eastcoast compared to me, and for me to hit on any site on the server is slow, when I hit on a server here in Cal, like downey, its fast as all can be. Those extra few hops really make a difference, I keep telling my ex partner that the server wont load, it's dead, and he keeps telling me it's not the server but rather some router of perhaps Maywest that has gone down again, meanwhile my virtual account on the server in downey works just fine, so when I was in the web design business, I used to find a host that was closer to my client than to myself so that it would always load faster for them. Some clients just dont understand that while it may load fast for them it may be slow for someone else, so it's best to just get them an account with a reputable host in their own area so that it loads fast for them, they are then under the belief that they are on the fastest servers in the world.
