View Full Version : splashhost problems
diavolosol 02-01-2002, 01:09 AM what happened to splashhost? i got my reseller account a few weeks ago and now none of my clients can upload any of their files because it says there is no spacde left on the server and i am getting calls every few minutes here because the loads are extremely high at 40.00 and more and my clients shopping carts are not working and they are losing business as well. i also cant get into my reseller WHM, i have 5 important accounts of clients waiting to setup since this afternoon and i cant create accounts becaiuse the server is out of space.
of course nobody is on live help and i don't have root access so i can't fix it myself. the same thing happened last night for 5 hours. this is the end of my business and i am losing all my customers i've worked so hard for months. :bawling: :bawling: i cant even more my files because there is no way to even create backups. does anyone know of a more reliable provider because i cant go on more like this. :(
dektong 02-01-2002, 01:12 AM By upload you mean none of your client can access their websites? I wonder whether their /tmp is full .... this can be caused by a client's script (usually doing infinite loop) filling up the /tmp ... Best of luck ...
cheers,
dektong 02-01-2002, 01:14 AM BTW, if you have SSH, try to type "df" (without the quotes) and paste the output here ... You can also do "top -c" to see what causes most of the server load (but beware: unfortunately top also takes some CPU load)
cheers,
techx 02-01-2002, 01:24 AM Dunno what's wrong really but splashhost is currently sporting 468.10 CPU usage on it's main server. And the reason your clients can't upload is cuz the /home is maxed out at 100%.
This is seriously nuts -- if it's a customer of SplashHost that has let off some dumb script, I would love to give them a good lecture on resource usage!
My clients are climbing down all entries of mine and I'm seriously annoyed.
trustedurl.com 02-01-2002, 02:03 AM same here... /home is almost at 100% and CPU usage is crazy. Also only 6 users were logged in....
I wonder what's going on
same thing happened yesterday around the same time....
and even worse, I can't reach alan 'cos his mail bounces back...
this is annoying...
btw, you can't even ssh into the account.
trustedurl.com 02-01-2002, 02:05 AM diavolosol, you can make backups in cpanel or ssh into the account and tar it up. :) (once ssh works again)
Alan - Vox 02-01-2002, 02:19 AM We are still experiencing technical difficulties with that server. We have replaced the hardware but that has not resolved the problem. The partition home was not near full when i went to sleep a few hours ago.
trustedurl.com 02-01-2002, 02:21 AM Alan, maybe it's not the hardware, but somebody messing with stuff? (spamming? bad scripts? etc.) ?
I do have to admit, replacing the hardware was a good gesture!
And all seems okay again! :)
Alan - Vox 02-01-2002, 02:38 AM The new hardware seems to have taken the randomness out of it, it now crashes at the same time. I think our only alternative will be to format the server and start over. Unless there is some linux admins out there who think they can solve it? anyone?
NexDog 02-01-2002, 02:45 AM Hi,
You don't have a sysadmin? :eek2:
Alan - Vox 02-01-2002, 03:13 AM umm, when Jason from pwebtech doesnt know whats wrong? who else will? I dont know anyone better than him
NexDog 02-01-2002, 05:03 AM Ah, so you do have a sysadmin! You had me going for a minute. We aren't as big as you and I would die without our guy........
Cognigens 02-01-2002, 05:10 AM Alan, /home is 100% used. That's why!
We need a "bigger box". You must have underestimated space users would use. ie. With 12GB space, you can only have that many resellers of 500MB-3.5GB space...
Hard drives are cheap nowadays. 100GB units are in the market. Upgrade the HD then, then migrate the data.
Using a RAID5 system would really be helpful.
diavolosol 02-01-2002, 05:26 AM Thats what i'm saying the drive is full!!!! Its been 4 hours now and i'm getting very angry. Why can't they just remove a few file or folders and the whole thing is back to normal??? It takes less than a minute but it seems like nobody is at the live support to talk to and nobody cares what happens to our reputation or clients :( I'd be happy to help clean and fix the machine if nobody knows how but this is pissing me off!!!!!
diavolosol 02-01-2002, 06:12 AM bash$ df -h
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/sda1 1.1G 345M 689M 33% /
/dev/sda5 12G 12G 0 100% /home
/dev/sda6 2.1G 1.8G 266M 87% /usr
/dev/sda7 787M 437M 310M 58% /var
bash$
is anyone still alive over there? 5 hours! please :bawling:
cyansmoker 02-01-2002, 06:54 AM Alan,
if your admin can't be reached, and you aren't comfortable with doing your server administration yourself, pm/email me if you wish; I'll be happy to give you a hand.
Alan - Vox 02-01-2002, 08:27 AM diavolosol what do you mean its been 5 hours? It was fixed when i last posted and drive space looks more like this.
root@superfastserver [/home/alan]# df -h
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/sda1 1.1G 345M 689M 33% /
/dev/sda5 12G 9.8G 2.0G 83% /home
/dev/sda6 2.1G 1.8G 265M 87% /usr
/dev/sda7 787M 440M 307M 59% /var
Nothing against you here. But I do think 83% occupied for home partition is a bit high especially when it is not a big partition. I would suggest you add another HDD. Also clean up your /usr partition. It could get filled up next day if the server push a lot of traffic which may cause some problem.
Alan - Vox 02-01-2002, 08:57 AM the /usr/ partition wont get filled up in a day because the logs arent in there.
allera 02-01-2002, 09:11 AM Why not get a second hard drive? Get a much larger drive, mount it as /home2, take down the services on the machine, copy all of /home to /home2, unmount /home, mount /home2 as /home, and start the services again (or reboot). You'll lose the 12G /home was using (unless you can find another use for it), but you'll gain many, many new GB. :)
Happy Admining.
*I am not responsible for any problems that arise for the above directions. ;)
Cognigens 02-04-2002, 12:59 AM argh!!! splashhost is down again, and Alan must be sleeping at the moment (I'm located at GMT-5). pegasus looks fine though. This is not OK alan! Too many incidents these couple wks...
yeah, I second the suggestion to add additional hd or upgrade to much larger one. 100GB is in the market already. 2gb space is not enough, and can easily gets filled considering that you offer 500MB-1.5GB to each resellers.
If you need additional tech support person, let me know. I'm willing to offer my help just for the cost of my reseller account. At least I can remote-reboot the server when you are not available. (you have to sleep each day, and I'm on a different timezone). Or help you troubleshoot whatever problem you're suspecting as eating up the drive space mysteriously. I've been running linux server since 98, so, I might know a thing or two.

trustedurl.com 02-04-2002, 01:08 AM Actually it's NOT down right now.

Alan - Vox 02-04-2002, 06:50 AM What i would like to know is why everyone feels it is neccesary to post in here everytime splash host goes down. I have told everyone that server is having problems, and it is only 1 server, I have 3 others which are working fine.
This particular server has had issues with crashing the last few weeks. We have tried replacing the hardware but that hasnt improved the situation. We are now planning to have the server formatted, the os re installed and the sites restored.
Can you please tell me how posting in here every time the server does crash helps the situation?
This is not a drive space issue, the drive space only filled up during one of the crashes.
diavolosol 02-04-2002, 07:01 AM if the splashhost main server (inckuding support sites) is down, where else can we know what is going on??? after over 2 hours, still waiting patiently for my websites to come back up. do you have an ETA? :(
Alan - Vox 02-04-2002, 07:11 AM I have been unable to get the splash host server to come back online after this crash. Looks like i will have to pay the big buck to get someone into fix it. I wouldnt want to make a guess at how long it will be before its back online.
NexDog 02-04-2002, 08:10 AM Hi Alan,
Hang in there! You've built up a sturdy reputation on this forum and elsewhere over the past year and you will survive this hiccup, I'm sure.
Why don't you launch that server entirely and just get a new one? Not the cheapest solution but the easiest and your safest bet. Sometimes hardware goes bad and whatever you do to fix it, another problem will arise.
Hang in there!
Alan - Vox 02-04-2002, 08:15 AM After repeated attempts we have been unable to get the Splash Host server back online. We are now waiting for a pegasus technician to get there which could take up to an hour. They will then start the planed os re install which could take 1.5-3 hours.
Alan - Vox 02-04-2002, 08:26 AM Hi Nexdog, the hardware has already been completely replaced. And now the operating system is away to be reinstalled, so i guess you can say its just the same as having a new server.
Hopefully things will all go well and Splash Host wilkl be back to its reliable self after this.
AlaskanWolf 02-04-2002, 08:53 AM Just a suggestion to Splashhost and any customers in general
Web Hosting Talk is not owned by <insert hosting company here>, Therefore anytime a post is made in WHT, a host is not and should have to come in here and either explain or defend their company in any way, shape or form.
Each company has their own support emails, support phone numbers etc.... No where on any host site that I have ever seen is
"Please...if you are having major issues with our services, go to Web Hosting Talk and post your question there"
Time and time again, it just seems WHT is becoming a central place for customers to request support from hosting companies and the mod's allow it........its getting old....

And I haven't seen a problem with the thread, up to the last few posts (starting with this one):
