View Full Version : Experiences with ***********? Alternatives?

I tried searching the board for Hostex, but I didn't get any results, which amazed me! I thought they were known, I found them through some top100 site I think..

I am now with them for about a year and received average but very polite and quick support and great speeds. I am doubting about leaving them for a cheaper host though, because I think they ask too much.

Currently using:
80MB
500MB/mo traffic
PHP4, mySQL ($1/m per db - using 2 now), CGI, raw log files, URL/email catcher etc.
Cost around $30/mo

What I'm looking for:
Same but with at least 5 *.domain.com, more webspace, extra db's included, multiple virtual domains (pointing to same server) and good/cheap reseller opportunities. Webtrends Log Analyzer installed by default would be a great plus as well.

So two questions:
- What is your experience with Hostex?
- Are there better hosts who offer more for the same price?

Thanks for replies :)

Hi,

I'm sure they're a nice a host. I've never heard of them but that means nothing. :D

But half a gig transfer and 80 megs space sor $30/mo! HOLY S**T!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There are about 1 million hosts that can halve that price and give you twice as much. Just read a few posts and you'll see who's popular at the moment. E.g. http://aletiahosting.com - 200 MB space, 10 GB transfer - $9.95/mo.

I think you need to have a look around.........

yeah, $30/month is a bit high.......but beware
of some of the really cheap hosts....

To answer your questions:
1) I have no experience with hostex
2) Yes, you can definitely get more for 30/month

good luck

LOL It's really bad huh? Maybe I should explain a bit more about their price system tho. You can turn on/off services as you please and only pay for the days you've actually used the service. Same for webspace used, you pay $0.09 per MB. I like that freedom a lot.. but I saw quite some other offers that were cheaper, so that's why I'm looking around if I can get a better host.

While waiting for replies to my post - and maybe some great suggestions for hosts - I'm looking around on this forum to see if there are any interesting alternatives for me.

Support & speed are most important to me. I also don't want any complaining about CPU usage, I saw some sites want to shut down your site because of that. I'd rather have them help me get the usage down then.. or telling me which script it is, whatever.

Anyway I'll keep looking. Thanks for your suggestion.

Selected 3 hosts which seemed pretty good to me, altho hostrocket sounds worst (see hostrocketsucks.com :P). I've requested stories about recent experiences here: http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=34116.

Other suggestions are welcome there, so let's keep this topic hostex-only, altho I doubt there is anyone with experience with hostex here :D.

A friend and I hosted a site with Hostex back in 2000 and we were quite satisfied with their service and support. At the same time we hosted a different site with HostRocket (back when they were known as hostfree.cc). To compare the experiences, our site at Hostex was nearly always up and the speed was excellent, while our site at HostRocket was constantly down and when it was up it tended to be considerably slower than we anticipated. We also ran into several problems with HostRocket support regarding the registration of domain names and the way they handled their affiliate program.

- Are there better hosts who offer more for the same price? Yes, there are a lot of hosts who offer the same features for about half the price you're paying. Just be careful not to end up somewhere where the support is worse than you're getting now or you'll wish you stayed with Hostex! We are hosting with Site5 right now (dedicated) and we have been very pleased with them.

That's exactly why I'm afraid to leave Hostex, because I've had bad experiences before them. I just think the price difference is too big to remain with Hostex...

I've heard (and read) too many bad stories about Hostrocket, so I definitely won't go with them. Site5 had some bad stories too, but it seems they've always been resolved and the attitude of customer support there seems pretty good (from what I've seen and heard).

So it seems to lead to a choice between Site5 and SolidLoad. I have to do some more research on SolidLoad. They offer about the same as Site5 for half the price, there must be a catch somewhere (since Site5 is already at half the price I currently pay with more features). An outsider would be Cyberweb3, but since I haven't seen much about them on this board, I feel like I would be going in blind.. and I don't like that...

Thanks for your reply, glad I found someone else who has hosted at Hostex as well :)

Give wizardshosting a try, Carlos definatly knows what hes doing and you will very rarely find anything bad written about them.

;) If you really want to know, we have been doing quite well although we are not too happy with ChampionHost right now for stealing our splash image.

Anyway, Change was not asking about my hosting company so lets try to keep the thread on topic.

I got spam from them as well today. It's the second time. Since I've left them they suddenly start spamming, glad I'm gone!

Since then I've been with Site5 for about 2 months after which I switched to Voxtreme for a reseller account. Couldn't be happier! I pay less and get MUCH more and even much better support :D
