View Full Version : Inexpensive, reliable, low-requirement host?

I've been using the free 100 Mb space my ISP gives me along with a DNS/E-Mail re-direct service for my registered domain. It's pretty low traffic, just sharing pictures, etc. for family and friends and storing files for posting on boards.

My requirements:

Reliable!
100 + Mb
good transfer (~5+ Gb/mo)
control panel
webmail
ftp
a few subdomains would be nice

I tried Hosturbo a while back when they were new, and we all know how that turned out, so I aborted that and stuck with what my ISP gave me, but I was recently notified that they were cutting the space back to 10 Mb. and will begin charging.

I do realize that 'you get what you pay for', but I'm not looking for a lot (relative to others) and am not expecting a whole lot, just reliable service that meets my requirements.

I'm looking at gearhost, f5hosting, and a few others but would love to hear a few recommendations.

Thanks,

Paul

Hi Pablo. Sorry to hear about your problem! While I'm not sure if this will be allowed, I'd like to suggest that you have a look at this particular forum on the Web Host Directory board:

http://forums.webhostdir.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=875

It lists a whole bunch of hosts for just about any price range and should give you some ideas of who else is out there.

If you have any other questions, I'll be happy to help.

All the best,

I wonder if what you think you need is really what you need.

That 5+ gig for primarily a family site. Wow! You must have a lot more friends than I do.

Even your space requirements seems like a lot. Are you optimizing those icons before uploading?

Jodi K.,

Thank you very much for the link...I'll take some time tonight going over it.

Gordo,

I'm looking at a 'worst case' scenario...to make sure I will always have enough storage space for pictures, movies, files, etc., and want to ensure that I never exceed the bandwidth as to not incur any additional charges. Also, as previously stated, I will often post (actually link) picture on certain other bulletin boards I visit, and posts on those sites usually number in the thousands per day. If a thread is viewed a few hundred times, and the picture(s) is continuously loaded from my page, well...it can add up pretty quickly.

No, those probably aren't my exact needs, but they are realistic. And I'd rather err on the agressive side as opposed to the conservative one.

Thanks for your input.
