Come up with something unique about your site and a special reason people should come to it, that's really the best advertising you can get free or paid

The best form of advertising has to be local advertising but it wouldn't be free.

I think the question is being misunderstood.

I get that feeling too

If the OP means free advertising as in places you can get it listed, it would be getting it on search engines and sites mentioned around WHT that have a listing of hosting accounts

There are a number of free web hosting directories to submit to .. check out hostdirs for the list.

Submit to all search engines and all directories, that should be the first step and easiest step. There are plenty of webmaster forums, and free webhosting forums around as well, may be you can put an Offer threads there. But remember, dont spam, it does no good but spoilt your image.

You can also write articles, or do press releases, and submit them to a myriad of web sites. Provided your article or press release catches someone's attention, you could gain quite a buzz -- thus, free advertising.

Well the first step is to submit your site to search engines and directories... and then FFA's... but for that you have to give a junk email.. they'll send you bundles of emails....

and keep on taking part ... in activities...

and you'll gain your customers..

But the key is to be patience... :)

Avoid FFAs (Free for all) links ... they do not work and end you up with tons of spam and wasted hours :(

Yes, never ever use FFAs. This is just a waste of time and efforts.

Another suggestion, participate in the forums like WHT on regular basis and try to help our people. This is also a great source of traffic and building faith in your clients.

Try networking with others. Chamber of commerce, local lead groups, etc.! Often the memberships are free or available for low cost.

have a few top sites point to your site.

I have gained 2 clients in the last month from affordable-web-hosting-providers.com

judging from the domain name i suspect this site will show up in the major engines at a fairly good rank soon enough.

I am listed on several other top sites as well but have yet to see any results.
