AND WHAT SHOULD I KNOW ABOUT IT. hayes 01-30-2002, 09:07 PM lots to know.... where would you like to start? I suggest asking a more direct question.... okihost 01-30-2002, 09:21 PM I honeslty would say go buy a "GOOD" linux admin book. Read it then ask questions.. I found by not reading up first I asked a million questions the book answered for me. Plus is it a great reference.. Good Luck.. JayC 01-30-2002, 09:48 PM I honestly would say don't rush into it. Seriously, if you're considering getting started in any business and you still have to ask "how would I start" and "what should I know about it" you're a long way from getting started. Read here, especially in the "running a web hosting business" forum, and you'll get some idea of how many thousands of web hosts there are. Read the many "what can I do to get customers?" posts... read the regular "how long did it take you to get your first customer?"posts. Read the "honestly, how long was it until you started making a profit posts." And count the number of "whateverhost has suddenly gone out of business" posts. Without a doubt, web hosting can be a profitable business. But it's a mistake to think profit is automatic, it's a mistake to think it's easy money and it's a mistake to think it's a business you can run without any specific knowledge -- not to mention general knowledge about running a business. Competition is tough, profit margins are small, and it will take a lot of your time. HostNutt 01-30-2002, 10:35 PM I have to agree! Don't start an Internet company becuase you feel that it is an easy place to make money! It is a VERY competitive market and there are a lot of people that offer the same thing as everyone else. My suggestion: Try to find something that will set you appart from the rest and run with that. Then you should have no problem answering the question, "Why should I go with you?" Incognito 01-30-2002, 11:29 PM If that is the best question you can ask you aren't ready. Open some accounts of your own. Host at more than one place. Read.....Read.....Read.... Read offline Read online Use this forum as a learning resource. Then you will know when you are ready. You will be able to ask questions about specific issues you don't fully understand and direct your inquiries to the right sources. Good luck....a great business....but one must prepare for it. wmac 01-31-2002, 12:17 AM I am not sure if you have the experience of being a webmaster yourself. If not I strongly suggest to obtain a webhosting account and operate it for at least 2 months. After gathering enough experience of an end user you are ready to learn about a hosting business. During those two months try to learne everything a webmaster needs. Mac allan 01-31-2002, 12:20 AM Originally posted by Veo HOW DO I START MY OWN WEBHOSTING COMPANY? AND WHAT SHOULD I KNOW ABOUT IT. That's very true, indeed! :D Seriously, if you want be a webhost, you better know how to deal with tech support ... don't be too excited with reseller programs and hoping you can outsource your support to somebody else ... Good luck cheers, PS: allan, look at my title now ... I realized you no longer use them, so I grabbed it before somebody else does :) I guess I am too bored with my "Complete Newbie" title :D Host Visions 01-31-2002, 10:07 AM If that post doesn't deserve a big BUMP, I don't know what does! allan 01-31-2002, 10:11 AM Originally posted by dektong PS: allan, look at my title now ... Oh well, we all have to make sacrifices when starting a new venture :). Although, I guess it is necessary, after all you wouldn't want a dumb reporter to have root access :D. Whitey 01-31-2002, 08:50 PM I have seen web hosting companies come and go overnight. If it is something you really want to do you will need to actually spend some time and dedicated yourself to the business if that's what you want it to be. Dedication and knowledge are the keys to success in a web hositng business. Just my thoughts anyway. |
