Hello all

A friend is looking to get a dedicated server from "The Tomsyer Network" and wants to know people's opinions on wether he should opt for the standard 10mbp/s offering, or spend the extra $15 a month for the 100mbp/s port instead.

What's people's opinions on the matter?
Does having 10mbp/s really restrict download speeds?

Depends on the popularity of the site. larger pipe allows you to spike more bandwidth. You are still limited to the bandwidth per month they give.

A better question is what provider in your list has the features and support to support your business needs.

Good Luck!

Thanks for the response
Do you know off hand what the maximum throughport (sp?) would be on a good day? I'd guess about 1000kb/1mb right?

peak at 10mbp/s or 100mbp/s, but will go over bandwidth doing that.

You will have to read the TOS/AUP, to find out what they will accept

I think that your friend should start with 10 Mbps first and watch his MRTG graphs. If the traffic peaks to 10 Mbps very frequently then there is a good reason to upgrade to 100 Mbps port. Otherwise 10 Mbps port is a better choice as it's safer in case of DDoS attack or in case somebody gets control over his box.

Also he should consider the monthly traffic allotment issue. With most providers it makes more sense to get a few boxes and to put a high traffic sites on separate boxes as it's usually cheaper to get two boxes with 1000 GB/month of traffic included each then get one box and to pay even 500 GB of overages.

Ah, well the server he's looking to get comes with a 1000GB per month allowance, but as standard, only comes with a 10mbp/s port, he wanted to know basically wether that port is to restrictive for a small webhosting company or not.

save the money and upgrade later when/if you need it later...
