View Full Version : Serverload is too high and so does memory used. Desperate for some helps
Amavisca 11-02-2004, 08:41 PM Hi all!
I am really new at this kind of stuff so I put a question here mayb some 1 can help me out ( willing to pay money if it is resonable price) I am running a vbulletin 3.03 forum. I recently move to a dedicate server ). My forum is running ok but somtimes it is very very slow, I look at the Service Status right now is
Server Load 40.48 (2 cpus)
Memory Used 86.9 % ( with a blinking yellow )
It happens on and off . This problem never happen before till i move to the dedicate one.
I did ask the tech of that host for help but they are either away or dont know how to do either. So is there anyway that I can keep my server load and memory use low ??
Here is some info you guys may need:
1. semi-dedicated (however I am the only one in server right now as the tech said)
2. Processor InformationProcessor #1 Vendor: GenuineIntel
Processor #1 Name: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.00GHz
Processor #1 speed: 3000.150 MHz
Processor #1 cache size: 1024 KB
Processor #2 Vendor: GenuineIntel
Processor #2 Name: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.00GHz
Processor #2 speed: 3000.150 MHz
Processor #2 cache size: 1024 KB

RevSlappy 11-02-2004, 08:47 PM it sounds like your forum is pretty large? How mnay people are on it during the time it gets slow? Is it httpd or mysql using all the resources. Have you tried researching some my.cnf tweaks as well as httpd.conf tweaks ?
Amavisca 11-02-2004, 09:12 PM Umm, when it is low , the amount ppl is about 45 to 50 online at the same time.
Sice i am in semi dedicate ( however im the only one on the server right now) I dont have access to my.cnf as well as httpd.conf ( or mayb i can but I just dont know how)
WebAuth 11-02-2004, 09:16 PM So the machine is running VPS software as well as Plesk. Correct?
Amavisca 11-02-2004, 09:38 PM That, I cant tell you, even thou I have a dedicated server; However I can only get to cpanel, everything else, my webhost company taking care of. I assume we don't since the cpanel interface doesnt say anything about Plesk. I will ask my webhost and let you know for sure.
For the time being, any idea would be really appriciated!
FrzzMan 11-02-2004, 09:54 PM When the server load go sky high, take a look at your iostat, is it go high (nearly 100%) too?
PS: Chào :D
Amavisca 11-03-2004, 12:26 AM Im not sure but sometimes I even see my serverload go up to 200 -_- blinking yellow and red everywhere ( apache fail as well)
So this is a HT Pentium 4 3.0 Ghz with just 512 MB of RAM? Wow.
Based on the top output, you are using 945 MB of swap, which is twice as much as your physical RAM! No wonder your iowait is through the roof (193%)? Actualy CPU usage is low, so that's fine.
This server just doesn't have anough RAM. Given the current load, you need at least 1.5 GB of RAM, since the goal is not to use swap when possible (some is usually used for processes that run very rarely).
genuine 11-03-2004, 03:29 AM look at netstat when slow, how many connect in one time ?
maybe flood action... have some experience with it.. and upgrade more RAM if possible..
PS: Chào :D
wheimeng 11-03-2004, 04:53 AM You might want to upgrade your RAM :D

He seems to use cPanel, so its not Plesk. I doubt its a VPS.

around 40-50 ppl online when it slows. Sometimes the web went very slow, sometimes I can't event connect .
Kamejoko 11-03-2004, 09:54 AM It is absolutely RAM problem. You are spending all CPU for swap IO right now.
Upgrade to 2G of RAM and you will be OK.
Amavisca 11-03-2004, 10:10 AM Thanks you guys for the input. I am sure that will help me ton, I guess I will need to contact the host and tell them to upgrade the ram.
Beside upgrade ram, Do i need to config anything to optimize the server?

Optimize mySQL and install Turck MMcache. You can find all the info in vB's forums.
Amavisca 11-03-2004, 12:56 PM Thnx , I alreayd ask the vb staff but didnt get the response yet so I take a shot here and see if you guys can help me, about 5 mins ago, my site is down ) it is up again now ) and i look at the server status I see apache (1.3.32 (Unix)) failed
interchange failed
What does it stand for??
WCHost 11-03-2004, 01:18 PM If your site is running and Apache still showing failed, it means it is okay. that "Service Status" usually updates SLOWER than actual, since it is not real time.
Server could be rebooted not long ago usually if everything failed but site is working. as i said...that page is not real time.
Also, advices have been given that your webhost is not putting enough ram into the server and it uses SWAP instead. SWAP only be used when physical ram is used out. So the OS chooses to use harddisk to store what ram stores.
The problem why you see IOWaits went to the sky, is because Physical Ram is FASTER than Harddisk speed, so CPU needs MORE so called "energy" to load the memory from harddisk.
You do not have anything to do, except move to another VPS OR convince the webhost to upgrade their server so you have a comfort living in that server.
There is nothing a vbs can do about it, since it is technically the server problem from the "top" command. If it was a bug, it will have high CPU load, and high memory uses.
Well....i think i didn't help much here since I am having a problem on the other post too...
cheers gd luck
Amavisca 11-04-2004, 12:18 AM Thnx for the input Wchost, so basically I cant do anything beside ask the host upgrade ram? and If I upgrade then how much more ram do I need ( can you estimate the cost as well)
genuine 11-04-2004, 01:09 AM if upgrade, 2GB is best.. cost is base on your hosting provider.

This is what my host said : "There is a one time fee of $250 per 1GB of RAM. This includes the cost of the memory and installation."
Do you guys think it is a reasonable price?? (Sorry I have very new so I need you guys help me some input)
Thanks
Zenutech 11-04-2004, 09:43 PM I think adding 1 Gig is enough. The price is a little high, but it is not completely insane. I would accept it if I were you.
pizzaboy_au 11-04-2004, 11:41 PM Hi Amavisca,
I will look into your system for free if you want me to.
Just PM me.
genuine 11-05-2004, 01:42 AM i will accept it, it's a great deal.
