View Full Version : Gearhost - Unix Accounts
strange1 01-30-2002, 10:24 AM So itīs about 3 weeks ago when I heard Gearhost is going to offer Unix packages probably "next week". What about it? Still no info on that?
I really doubt they will ever release unix packages ... :(
AlexNguyen 01-30-2002, 10:57 AM I don't understand the interest.... Why don't you just open an account with a company that DOES offer Unix accouts currently if that's what you need?
There are plenty of good, competitively priced hosts out there without waiting for Gearhost.
strange1 01-30-2002, 12:02 PM NO Host offers packages like Gearhost does! Not even the closest at those prices ... I can wait, just wanted to hear news.
markblair 01-30-2002, 12:20 PM With all the work they've been doing lately, it is understandable that they are delayed in offering Unix plans. I am waiting as well. I have one account with them already and one that will move over once Unix is live. I can wait and hope it's soon but I'd rather have it work properly first before they offer something that is half working.
On the account currently there, I have nothing but good things to say. Everything has been setup in a very fast and efficient manner and any support issues were resolves within hours. Something no other host I've ever been with has been able to accomplish.
ochiba 01-30-2002, 12:33 PM I know it's hard because you're right *no one* offers what GearHost offers at such a great introductory price. Trust me, AlexN. I've been searching like mad.
Last week when I spoke to Ryan, they were trying to migrate accounts (including mine) onto on of their *nix servers that day. They chose not to because the server had a few issues, and they didn't want folks sites going down. I was frustrated at first, but honestly I think it would have been more frustrating to upload my site add another account and then have all my sites go down every few minutes.
The reason why you hear so many positive things about them is because as Ryan said, they didn't just up and start a webhost company, they planned and prepared for quite a while. If they rush their *nix platform servers to satiate the restless webbie mob, and the servers are faulty, well judging from the vocal members of this board, there is no way they are going to keep their reputation as a good host.
If you think about it, wouldn't you rather have them prepare like they did with ther W2K platform servers?
I think I'm babbling so I'll shut up now.

Well, if you open up a *nix server I'll join.... I LOVE that control panel!
RyanK 01-30-2002, 10:01 PM Hum ... did somebody say this weekend? ;)

The reason we don't have Linux just yet is that we are making way for iControl to port to the Linux. We are working on a modified version of RH to do this but taking a MS product and porting it to Linux is EXTREMELY hard, almost impossible ... thus the wait in time. Our development team, including myself are working very hard to complete the programming as soon as possible. I think some are thinking we could just throw it up and put it online but we're a little more detailed than that. We are actually innovating the technology now, for iControl's future.

Isn't that the truth. Well, in my opinion, I can wait. The site I plan to transfer is working just fine on its current host however changing is something I anticipate as soon as possible. Like I've said before, I'd rather you take the time now and have a nicely working product than throw something together that is down half the time.
Thanks for keeping us posted. We patiently await the future plans.
HostNutt 01-30-2002, 10:31 PM Personally, I think it is more respectable for a company to test everything to a tee than get a server going, stuff a load of clients on it and have tech bogged down with support requests.
It is obvious they are putting the customer before profits and that is truly respectable!
Just a thought :)
Do you think you could give a little peek at what the packages are going to be like?
Are they going to be the same as the Windows accounts?
I know a lot of hosts have linux accounts that are better deals than the Windows accounts, I guess because the stuff is free? Like, instead of 250 megs for $10/month it'd be 350.... Also, just a few generic questions.... is it possible to change DNS information, and how many mySQL databases will/do they come with?
I'm looking around at webhosts, weighing the possibilities, and I'd like to decide within a week or two...
Mester 01-31-2002, 12:41 AM I *think* I was told the plans would be pretty much the same. I've had to find another host, but will be checking out gearhost in the future when I need another host :D

Well I can't really give out any details but they will be VERY close if not identical. The neat thing will be components, we working on getting a final quote on a ton of Linux components that users can use just like we have on the W2K servers. There will be a large press release when this happens so keep checking on our site but it will be shortly.
While we're on this topic we are doing beta testing for our applications and the new OS. If your interested in getting a sneak speak let me know.
Blake 01-31-2002, 02:26 AM Just wanted to second (or third, fourth, fifth) the compliments that Gearhost has been receiving regarding customer service. I've called them three times, and all three times they've answered the phone and helped me out with my issues. For once, I have a good feeling about a new hosting solution (though, as it's already been pointed out, they may be "new" to live service, but not new to planning out their solution).
I hope to have a long relationship with them!
Regards,
Blake
