I am looking to get a dedicated server to host multiple ventrilo servers on. Does anyone have knowledge or have done this before? Does anyone know how much bandwidth each client uses on the server?Does this type of server need a powerful processor or more bandwidth? Any help is wanted. Thanks!

The server requires more bandwidth then the clients do. The bandwidth that gets used is determined by the codec and sample rate as selected by the server administrator. The following examples assume that the server is configured to use the default GSM 6.10 codec at 11KHz sample rate. This will use approximately 3K bytes per second of bandwidth for each active voice stream.

4 people on the same server.
All 4 are in the same channel.
1 Person talking.

= 3K bytes/sec of inbound data.
= 9K bytes/sec of outbound data.

4 people on the same server.
All 4 are in the same channel.
2 people talking.

= 6K bytes/sec of inbound data.
= 18K bytes/sec of outbound data.

As you can see the mathematics are very simple. The more people in the same channel equates to the more bandwidth consumed, and it gets worse if more then one person is talking. This also places a greater burden on the clients as well if more then one person in the same channel is talking, which is one of the primary reasons that dial-up users won't care to much for the GSM codec.

As mentioned, these numbers are for the GSM codec. Instructing the server to use a different codec (which all clients will be forced to use) will effect how much bandwidth is consumed. To see a list of currently supported codec's you can issue the following in a command prompt window and the server will display a list of supported codec's and associated formats.

I was looking for a way to set that up also, is there a way to "set up accounts" (with limited bandwidth)?

Well all of that is correct but ventrilo isn't providing any new licenses for hosters. This means that unless you are one of their exisiting hosting companies you can only run (1) 8 slot ventrilo server.

This was done apparently to stop people from not paying for the license.

http://www.ventrilo.com/purchase.php

Ventrilo is comprised of two parts, a Client and a Server.

Server - Public version:

The public version of the server can be used without a license fee, so long as you abide by the terms of the LICENSE. Each of the public servers contains a file named LICENSE and by downloading and running the server you are agreeing to the terms of this license.

Server - Pro version:

1) The Pro version of the Ventrilo server is only available to professional hosting companies.

2) You must be a legally registered corporation with your respective state / jurisdiction. You must also provide proof of official corporation status. Again, this is a requirement and is not open for debate or discussion.

3) We do NOT license individuals or businesses who want to run servers for private use or in conjunction with some other service / membership. You will need to rent a server from an officially licensed hosting company.

Under no circumstances will we provide anyone with a private copy of the Pro server. Any inquiries in this regard will be deleted and will not be answered.

Update: At the current time we are not accepting any new license applications. Any other licensing issues should be directed to the sales@ventrilo.com account.

If you need to rent a dedicated server please contact any of the licensed hosting companies on the hosting page.

Client:

Starting with version 2.1 the Ventrilo client software is free in accordance to the license that comes with each of the client programs.
