View Full Version : Going from the UK
Vortex-Steve 10-30-2004, 11:13 AM Just trying to find some prices for a week in Chicago with return flights from London. Currently the best I have found is £847 per person. What are the others from the UK finding in terms of prices?
If only this was being held in August, I'm going over to the USA for a month then anyway!
Thanks,
AndyGambles 10-30-2004, 01:40 PM Might have to re-think going if those are the best prices your getting.
Jamesc 10-30-2004, 01:45 PM Ive been looking into going:) a-harris found some flights for me for around £200 return, not sure if im going tho im proberly more than likley going to IW2005 tho:)
Vortex-Steve 10-30-2004, 01:57 PM I've been looking on expedia and £847 was best price for flights plus hotel. Via ba.com just for flights it's £500. Will keep looking, but I'm still expecting it to be fairly expensive, unless maybe there are enough people here who want to go we could do a group thing? Of course I think you need something like 16 people before that's worth doing.
markcastle 10-30-2004, 02:01 PM I'll be there... been looking for an excuse to visit Chicago for a long while.
MattF 11-07-2004, 01:27 PM What was the flight company providing the £200 return flights? I can't seem to get anywhere near that figure.
PhoneSupport 11-12-2004, 06:28 AM My little flight booking system gave me this...

I have a feeling I will not be going this year... ;)
Vortex-Steve 11-12-2004, 08:23 AM Yes, it does work out at rather a lot! £900 ($1600) for a short trip is pushing it a bit. If I could of combined it with a longer stay then I would of gone for it, unfortunately I already have plans for a month long stay in the USA for August so can't really do this as well.
slice16 11-20-2004, 04:39 PM ive just been quoted £426.20 (return flight) from manchester to Chircargo.
I found this on expedia (it doesnt include an hotel tho)
sirtwist 11-22-2004, 06:19 PM slice16:
You'll probably want to stay at the conference hotel anyway. We have a group rate of $131 a night. Hotel reservations are available at:
http://www.hostingcon.com/attend/housing.php
We'll be starting conference registrations in the next couple of weeks. We'll notify our pre-registered people first, then make registrations available to the general hosting industry a few days later.
rockergrrl 11-22-2004, 07:41 PM I would love to go (and stay at the Hyatt), but I wouldn't have money until February. :(
Is there a way I can do an IOU? ;)
F1Colo 11-22-2004, 09:52 PM i wouldnt mind going but i think ma gf would kill me going to usa with out her lol thats her dream trip and i aint paying 2 fares :P she can wait a lil longer :)

No. :) But you can check in February and see if there are registrations still available and if there are rooms still available. You never know, there may be a few. I wouldn't count on it, but maybe!
Jamesc 11-23-2004, 05:57 AM So who wants to put me in there suitcase as that seems like the only way im going to get there at the moment?!
MattF 12-12-2004, 12:47 PM What flights has everyone booked from the UK?
pdaniel89 12-22-2004, 06:21 PM http://www.cheapflights.co.uk/ is by far the best for cheap deals, I have seen so many things, but you need to be prepared to fly from Manchester?!? Some flights extreamly stupid prices, like 200 quid. Also have you looked on teletext? Go on ITV, then its 222.
Thankies
pdaniel89 12-22-2004, 06:27 PM just found one on teletext for 20quid return excluding taxes! bloody hell!
innovation 12-23-2004, 01:58 AM What is the hostingcon exactly? Is it like a big hosting conference, that will be something like those car shows, except instead of cars there will be servers?
F1Colo 12-23-2004, 06:28 AM i been thinking same and why dont they have it in uk?
MattF 12-23-2004, 09:13 AM i been thinking same and why dont they have it in uk?
Why should "they"? The organizers are based in Chicago and they've worked hard to prepare such event, they have local knowledge of the area, it is much harder to organize an event somewhere you've never been. As has been suggested before, by all means organize a UK event, you'll need to broker hotel rates, select a suitable central location, draw up a contract with a hotel and conference hall etc...
Note: I'm UK too.
Mark@Helm 12-23-2004, 12:52 PM I'll be going and as we're a platinum sponser we'll be taking about 5 members of staff. Hopefully I'll be able to find some cheaper tickets!
pdaniel89 12-23-2004, 05:57 PM A uk one would be good, not sure how popular it would be....
sirtwist 12-24-2004, 04:39 AM We're not opposed to considering an event in the UK in the future. I've been to London four times in the last two years and I absolutely loved it. Believe me, I'm not opposed to the UK. :)
As MattF said, however, we are based in Chicago and because this is a first-year event, we felt it would be better to plan something nearby to reduce one item from the very long list of stressful things about planning an event like this. :)
We had originally looked at Las Vegas because of its reputation as a good place for conferences, but concluded that managing it remotely while feeling our way through planning a first time event would just be too difficult. Planning one across the pond would be that much harder!
I won't promise we'll do one in the UK, but after we get one conference under our belt, we'll review and see where we stand. We'll be exploring many different options going forward I'm sure.
pdaniel89 12-24-2004, 06:34 PM Hello George,
Thank you for your consideration into one within the United Kingdom. May I please ask though, that you DO NOT have it in London, hardly anyone lives in London, it's an expensive place to live. Why not have it somewhere like Manchester?
Thanks
sirtwist 12-25-2004, 12:55 AM :) We haven't even decided to have one yet! We'll of course do the appropriate research before we would consider doing one in the UK and would try to place it where it would meet the needs of the attendees.

Surely it would be more suitable in a central location such as the Midlands?
pdaniel89 12-25-2004, 07:21 PM But the midlands isn't very populated, I would say that the local transport, food, places, hotel, attractions would be a key feature, rather than just the actual event. Manchester is easy to get to from London with key transport links, including train which you can for about £20, and it takes 2 hours. Or Flying, www.jet2.com they fly from scotland and london to Manchester for like £15. Also with Manchester within 1 hour on the train you can be in the middle of the country side.
Mind you thats my personal thoughts on the issue, im sure they will look at different aspects when looking into the event.
Thanks George for your consideration into the event, and i'll see you in June :P
Daniel
UH-Matt 12-27-2004, 09:17 PM Steve,
Best to get the flights by themselves and use the group discount for the conference hotel IMHO, at least you know the hotel will be nice.
If anyone has a good deal for flights please post the link, Im going with 3 staff...
jheslop1 12-28-2004, 07:46 AM I'll be able to get the flight alright as well as hotel/food/expenditure as this would be great for my business course. Only thing is I need someone to look after me during over there and while arriving at the states ;)
moosh28 12-28-2004, 01:44 PM hotel's in the area include:
Hyatt Regency O'Hare(where the show is)
These are a $3-5 USD cab ride/shuttle bus ride away
Doubletree O'Hare (near Allstate Arena)
Wyndam O'Hare (near Allstate Arena as well)
Sofitel O'Hare
Embassy Suites O'Hare
Best Western O'Hare
Ramada Plaza O'Hare
rates average from $89-$159/night
The Hilton O'Hare is right in the airport. Nice, cause you can take the train (L) and get off the first stop or so and be a block or so from the convention. Might be more expensive though.
Also note, SuperComm is also going on downtown at the same time, so rooms will be limited in the city.
Airlines- try closer to the date and check United..they usually have good deals within a month or so of travel
sirtwist 12-28-2004, 09:32 PM You're absolutely right about rooms probably being scarce in the area. June is right in the middle of prime convention season in Chicago, so I'm sure a lot of people will be in town staying at the hotels.
Please keep in mind that we have reserved a block of rooms at a discounted group rate at the Hyatt Regency O'Hare so that we would have availability for our attendees.
I'm sure there will be some who will choose to stay elsewhere, but just to let everyone know, we do have the rooms available at the Hyatt Regency. And there's a free shuttle to the hotel from O'Hare.
For those interested in reserving their rooms now, you can find more information on our travel page at http://www.hostingcon.com/attend/travel/.
jheslop1 12-28-2004, 09:53 PM What's the latest price for flights? I'm seeing them for £490+ now.
MattF 12-29-2004, 07:40 AM Yep, but for the extra £60 I'd choose BA anyday.
jheslop1 12-29-2004, 08:31 AM Yep and with BA no changes.

sirtwist 01-16-2005, 05:32 PM That's a pretty good price. I've paid $1500 for a round trip flight to the Uk from Chicago before.

Have you travelled with AA before? I've always thought that if they can't afford to paint their aircraft, they must be a "budget" airline ;)
Air France offer an even cheaper deal, but you have to stop off in Paris first. United Airlines also do a cheaper flight for stopping off in Washington DC, but I didn't fancy that either :|
sirtwist 01-16-2005, 06:09 PM I've always flown United when I flew to London, but I usually flew non-stop.
MattF 01-16-2005, 07:49 PM Theres one from Manchester leaving on morning of the 4th, and returning evening of 7th, pretty similar to what you've selected but depature on the way back in 19:45 so a little more flexible and £309, I imagine if the conference doesn't finish to 5pm you'll be in one hell of a rush to make it to the airport. This isn't a direct flight though.
UH-Matt 01-25-2005, 10:31 AM Airlinenetwork.co.uk
Leave on the morning of the 4th and return on the morning of the 8th for about 350 quid a person...
Havent searched around yet as this is the site I normally use for my flights.
We're now taking 4 people to HostingCon and will be staying 4th to 8th if anyone has better rates for me ... :)
a.harris 01-29-2005, 07:45 AM Shame, back in December KLM were doing some direct/viaAMS flights for £175-£250 rtn from 5-6 UK airports. Did tell Jamesc!
Looks like the cut off date is April now thought :(
