View Full Version : Rackspace or VoxRox?
swiftrhett 10-29-2004, 05:20 PM I want a very reliable server. I'm tempted to go with rackspace because they've been around longer and are a larger company.
I want a company that will help protect me from DOS and hackers, but most of the time, I will not require maintanence help. Once set up, it could go for months at a time without needing someone to look at it.
Another tricky part is migrating from EV1. Post suggestions here, thanks.
z280 Hosting 10-30-2004, 12:51 AM I'd say Voxrox, simply because they are a more human seeming company. If you wanted spacific protection with DOS/DDOS prevention, you could simply email Matt Kelly or someone high up in the voxel administration and he/she would do everything to make sure it gets done for you, whereas with Rackspace you may have to have to deal with a new staff member every time you request something.
Just my purely guess/logic/minor-experience based thoughts.
meporter 10-30-2004, 02:56 AM With regards to migration, what applications do you have running on the box at EV1? Is it Linux or Windows? Depending upon these, there are a number of tricks I know you can do. For example, use Apache to proxy the new server.
Cheers,
Matthew
BitOMagic 10-30-2004, 05:05 AM I don't think you can compare RackSpace to Voxrox. Simply because, VoxRox doesn't offer the Management service that RackSpace is known to offer.
If your wanting the quality of management service you get from RackSpace then you should go with RackSpace or a simliar company.
Voxrox doesn't offer the same type of service on management as RackSpace.
blueface 10-30-2004, 06:55 AM I heard Rackspace service has been degrading lately. I'd say go with a reputable managed provider. There are gnax/tranxactglobal, liquidweb, and servint, then hire a third party sysadmin (acunett, rack911, etc) to help secure your server.
illogix 10-30-2004, 01:10 PM Maybe Voxrox does not offer the level of management that Rackspace offers but I'm sure Voxel does (Same company).
I would contact them for a quote. You might also want to take a look at ServInt.
z280 Hosting 10-30-2004, 05:00 PM The thread starter did not specify that he was looking for a managed box, therefore unless he specifies later that he wants it managed, the fact that rackspace is managed is irrelevent.
IHNjustin 10-30-2004, 05:38 PM I know for a fact that Voxel does offer similiar management services to Rackspace. Voxrox is only a subsidiary of Voxel which sells unmanaged servers at very competitive prices. If you want a managed solution you need to work with Voxel, not Voxrox.
apollo 10-31-2004, 03:54 PM check out these companies:
datapipe.net
superb.net
servint.com
sergio80 10-31-2004, 11:24 PM Definetly Rackspace..
amusive.com 10-31-2004, 11:54 PM Go with datapipe.
90% of people who suggest rackspace have never dealt with them. They believe they are good because they charge a lot of money. Ignore them.
I know a few people who have been crapped upon by Rackspace. Do a search here, recently several people posted about their support. Yeah, they promise a 30 minute response. You know what response you'll get? "Hi, I'll forward this on for investigation" or "I've sent this to the right department!" A few hours later and you'll get a relevant response.
Rackspace is a waste of money. Go with a company that VALUES your business, not that sees you as a sack of money they want to get as much out of as possible.
Servint is also well thought of, but I don't personally know anyone doing business with them like I do datapipe.
Klama 11-01-2004, 12:21 AM Are you using datapipe now amusive?
You find them better?
amusive.com 11-01-2004, 12:26 AM No, I do not personally use them but I know people that do use them. One switched from Rackspace to Datapipe and, I should mention, has never regretted the move.
Rackspace is all about money (which is why they are on many spam blacklists). They don't care about the customer, they care about income streams. Nor is their support all that knowledgable or all that better than anywhere else (the person I know who switched had their drive wiped because the person "fixing" his server didn't know what RAID was. Yeah.)
illogix 11-01-2004, 12:29 AM I have direct experience with Servint and they really are first class. I always received a reply to my support requests in under 5 min by email or instantly when I called.
They are also true 100% managed. They will do anything you ask them. I once asked them to setup some SSL certs on some domains and they did it. The guy who did the setup also took the time to write me a small howto in case I wanted to know how to do it by myself (which I already knew, I just didn't have the time to do the setup by my self).
doug357 11-01-2004, 12:38 AM I have been using DP for a couple of years, they are not cheap but they are top notch in support and network.
apollo 11-01-2004, 03:08 AM ok..you may want to consider InnoDB for MySQL. They have hot-backup available and some large-scale clients prefer to use it.. (you don't need to shutdown the DB server while backuping)..
