Ok, what are your thoughts on the PIII 1 GHz vs the new Tulatin Celeron 1.2 GHz. All the reports I've been reading show that the Celeron is out performing the PIII. Anyone have any experience with this? I used to be dead set against Celeron chips, but it looks to me like they may be the replacement chip for the, no longer being built, PIII chip.

Celeron still has low FSB and Cache.
Why not use AMD or P4?
Go on Ebay and search for Pentium 4, 2 GHZ and there are acouple that are only $200.00 right now.

Why don't you use the Pentium 3 1.26GHz with 512KB of Cache? They are fairly new chips, I doubt they've discontinued them already.

Given that the Tualatin core Celerons now have 256Mb Cache, and they run at 100FSB - there is very little difference between them and a PIII E. However, if the PIII runs at 133FSB (and so does the RAM etc) then some vague performance increases should be noticed.
Having said that, many people are turning to AMD systems - for performance and cost reasons - and many bench tests show AMD far ahead of Pentium based systems. I do realise that many hardware vendors and the like still dont seem to be comfortable with AMD, but for performance for your $ you can't go wrong. And it seems that many AMD systems are very stable now days as well. They do get a fair bit hotter, and do require a little more effort but personally I'd prefer and Athlon over a Celeron every time.

Jkehe - I thought about that too, but my hardware guy says that ALL Pentium 3 chips (except celeron) have been discontinued.
Wolfy - I thought about AMD too, but heat is an issue.
Does anyone have good recommendations for 1U AMD cases?

Hi MikeA,
we build in germany 1U servers with AMD CPU´s.
You must only look for an good cooled case and an cooper heat sink. And I recommend an 300 Watt power supply for Athlon´s if 2 HD are used.
