View Full Version : dns zones, ip addys etc
Nick Jenkin 10-27-2004, 06:12 PM I need some help here guys as i'm getting more confused by the day.
It concerns having different IP's on the same server and private nameservers.
No excuse me if I'm not making sense at time, but thats because i'm confused as to whats going on.
To start with, i've got a dedicated server, which has it's own main shared IP address and two nameservers, with corresponding ip addresses.
I then installed a number of websites onto this server using these details through WHM, and they have been running fine and dandy.
The problem comes when I've started to try and use my private nameservers.
One of the domain names I purchased, I decided I wanted my own private nameservers for it. I applied to my registrar and they created them. I then got in touch with my server host and told them the nameservers, and they created the IP addresses and configured it all on my server.
I create the account in WHM and assign it to one of the IP's. Now this is the first step I could be going wrong. When i'm creating this account in WHM, i'm making it use one of the private nameservers IP address. Is this correct or should I be using the shared IP address?
What I noticed was that when I assigned that account to that IP, I wasn't then allowed to add any more accounts to that IP. Does this mean I need one IP address for every account I make?
I know this can't be right because I've got 10 accounts assigned to the main shared IP address of the server, and all using the same DNS details (ie, the ones supplied by my server host before I got my private ones)
Can someone please help me de-frazzle my brain before I go mad!!
Angelo 10-27-2004, 06:43 PM You do not need to assign the account to a dedicated ip because you want to use a private nameserver. Assign the account to the shared ip, your nameservers, if already set up right, will work for that account.
Nick Jenkin 10-28-2004, 02:27 AM Thanks, thats where I was going wrong I think. I'll try that and see what happens.
Is there a guide which explains how to set-up DNS zones in plain english?
I'd like to understand it, but everything i've come across seems to be aimed at techies.
Also, a guide on how to assign nameservers to IP addresses in WHM would also be handy, does anyone know of some good user-friendly links?

These will help you.
Nick Jenkin 10-28-2004, 03:04 PM Does it matter that the primary and secondary namerservers in WHM are different from my private nameservers?
The reason I ask is this.
When I create an account in WHM, i get this email;
+===================================+
| New Account Info |
+===================================+
| Domain: **********.org.uk
| Ip: **.**.**.*** (n)
| HasCgi: y
| UserName: *******
| PassWord: *******
| CpanelMod: x
| HomeRoot: /home
| Quota: 1000 Meg
| NameServer: ns.liquidweb.com
| Contact Email:
+===================================+
Account was setup by: root (root)
My private nameserver is different. And it's my private nameservers that i'm pointing this domain to.
eSited 10-28-2004, 03:07 PM Go to your WHM at the lest side click Server Setup Change your nameservers... if this is what your stuck with....
If you have a reseller account and you wanted it to have their own nameservers, go to Reseller Center and edit the reseller account's nameservers.
Nick Jenkin 10-28-2004, 03:19 PM It's my own server, and I dont have any reseller accounts.
So your saying I can't run my private nameservers alongside my existing liquidweb ones on the same server?
Angelo 10-28-2004, 03:23 PM WHM -> Edit Setup
Configure your own nameservers there. Assign IP's, add A records. Register the IPS with nameservers at your domain registrar and you are done.
Nick Jenkin 10-28-2004, 03:26 PM So I take it thats a no?
Lol, someone please give me a clear answer!
Hmmm, if I did that, that means I'd have to change the DNS on all my existing domains that are using the liquidweb DNS?
Does this mean downtime for existing sites?
Angelo 10-28-2004, 06:00 PM To get a clear answer, the question itself must be clear. I am making assumptions now, if your situation is what i understand, do this.
You can run your own nameservers. If you do not want to change your existing Setup of Master Nameservers which are your providers' and do not want to modify your domain records and does not have enough ip's to add more nameservers to your box.
Add a new DNS zone of your new nameserver that will point to your providers'.
WHM -> DNS Functions > Add New Zone
ns1.yourdomain.com IN NS yourexistingnameserver
ns1.yourdomain.com IN NS yourexistingnameserver2
ns1.yourdomain.com IN A ip-address
This will create you a private nameserver thats addressing your current providers' nameservers.
Nick Jenkin 10-29-2004, 02:50 AM Eek, sorry, I thought I was clear. You'll have to excuse my newbie-ness (is that a word?) on this subject, it's still a bit of a black art to me at the moment.
I want to keep the nameservers which were provided to me by my host. I've got some important sites running on them and don't want to start messing around, especially as I don't really know what I'm doing.
I want new sites i'm hosting to reside on the same server, but use the private nameservers i've had created. My domain registrar created the nameservers for me, and my host assigned IP addresses to these nameservers.
The reason why i'm trying to figure this out is because it took me about a month of emailing my host because it wasn't working. It eventually transcribed that they set it up wrong. I was pulling my hair out.
I hope everything is clear so far. If not, let me know!
What confuses me is when I look under DNS FUNCTIONS --> EDIT A DNS ZONE
Under this, I have a list of domains on my server. I've got a load of spare domains I was testing with last night in WHMAP. (I was testing out the software, purchasing some test packages, checking the accounts were being created in WHM etc). When I go to look at some of these domains, all I can see are the nameservers of my host, not my private nameservers. I assume for these domains to function correctly that I should be seeing my private nameservers in there? (Bearing in mind that at my registrar, i've pointed these domains to my private nameservers).
Or does the software somehow figure out that the private nameservers are indeed in turn pointing to my hosts nameservers. I'm confused about this whole issue.
Thanks for helping me out on this one, and I *hope* i've made things a little bit clearer!
