View Full Version : .biz or .cc ?
mantra 01-28-2002, 05:37 PM Which one do you think sounds better?
1) .biz
2) .cc
Forget what they stand for, just want to know which extension sounds better.
Thanks.
Angel78 01-28-2002, 06:13 PM hm... i went for .biz because it's sort of international TLD .cc is a island somewhere in the south right?
thewitt 01-28-2002, 07:29 PM .biz is outselling .cc on my site about 50 to 1, so I suspect that more people like the .biz than the .cc :).

greggish 01-28-2002, 10:38 PM Definitely .biz. I don't own any .biz domains yet but I would consider buying one for a site related to providing a service or business. So far I only own .com, .org, and .info.
TGL4387DD 01-28-2002, 10:56 PM I personally think .cc sounds cooler, and there is also a certain sense of uniquity to it. That's just me...Your call.
However, as far as registering a buisness domain goes; I would do my best to register a .com or .net name. Or even .org.
Scott 01-28-2002, 10:56 PM I would go with .biz over .cc since it seems to be more popular and user friendly.
TGL4387DD 01-28-2002, 11:14 PM What exactly do you mean by ease of use?
Scott 01-28-2002, 11:22 PM .biz short for business, easier for people to remeber over .cc which is as memorable as .cx :)
TGL4387DD 01-28-2002, 11:49 PM Lol...I "catch your drift".
21inchguns 01-29-2002, 02:02 AM yeah the .biz is pretty cool in my opinion......
.cc ????? maybe good for banks........

Well, a couple of factors: One, cheaper to register, Two, one is new. I think this might have something to do with it. Weren't there/are there restirctions on registering .biz names or has that gone out the window?
thewitt 01-29-2002, 09:42 AM Yes, there are restrictions for .biz domains.
Subject Do .BIZ domain names have any restrictions?
Author Tim
[From the Registry:]
Yes. The .BIZ domain can only be used for a "bona fide business or commercial use". A bona fide business use is one of the following:
To exchange goods, services, or property of any kind;
In the ordinary course of trade or business; or
To facilitate (i) the exchange of goods, services, information, or property of any kind; or, (ii) the ordinary course of trade or business.
Registering a domain name solely for the purposes of (1) selling, trading or leasing the domain name for compensation, or (2) the unsolicited offering to sell, trade or lease the domain name for compensation does not constitute a "bona fide business or commercial use" of that domain name.
For illustration purposes, the following do not constitute a "bona fide business or commercial use" of a domain name:
Using or intending to use the domain name exclusively for personal, noncommercial purposes; or
Using or intending to use the domain name exclusively for the expression of noncommercial ideas (i.e., registering abcsucks.biz exclusively to criticize or otherwise express an opinion on the products or services of ABC company, with no other intended business or commercial purpose).
but basically you have to be using it for a business...

And I can tell this is checked very closely at the time of registration. I suppose this is an after the fact thing, but that seems to indicate that any .biz domain up for sale on afternic (or similar) could be challenged and easily won without auction (assuming the registrar agrees and awards you the domain, or returns it back into the pool).
Such guidelines are silly if the registry doesn't have the means or capability to enforce them.
GordonH 01-30-2002, 11:28 AM Hello
I have no recollection of ever selling a .cc domain apart from 2 (and they were both for internal use by us).
Here are our approx breakdown per month:
700 - 800 .com/.net/.org
60 - 100 .biz/.info
300 - 400 .co.uk/.org.uk
10 - 20 .ca
5 - 10 .uk.com/.us.com (centralnic domains)
5 .it
5 made up of all the other ones including .cc
Of the .com/.net/.org ones all but a handful are .com's

Interesting. I went back last night and was analyzing sales patterns for the past two months based on our marketing campaign. More than 95% of our .cc names sales are from Canada, and appear to be driven by a print ad we placed up there. Of the rest, most are what I would consider "cover" domains, where the people who bought them already own the .com domain.
I took three orders for .cc domains this morning though, two "cover" orders and one where the .com is still available. This one is a registration out of Mexico City - si si!

Mester 01-31-2002, 01:20 AM I have my .cc but I'm not going to renew it because it costs too much :)
I like the way .cc doesnt sound commercial as does .biz, however .biz is more memorable and easier to say :D
