Hi,

I've seen people when giving advice saying:

"Just my two cents"

or something like that ..

Does anybody know what does that stand for and where did it come from?

Thanks :)

Maybe it's an upgraded version of "A penny for your thoughts." :D

It's basically a British / American way of saying my opinion (British say 2pence / Americans say 2cents)

When people died, it used to be common to put two copper coins over their eyes. ;)

If you do that they'll think you're talking about your nuts. :cartman:

I'd have to write a book before I could say "Just my 2 nuts"!

From the "Phrases with Origins" website:

"Put my two cents in" originates from the older "put my two bits in" and has its origin in the game of poker. When playing poker you have to make a small bet before the cards are dealt called an "ante" to begin play in that hand.
This phrase draws an analogy to the poker ante (two bits) and gains your entry into the conversation.

Not that I know that it isn't. But I also did a search earlier, and that was the most common result found. But in every case, it was almost word-for-word identical to this one... which might imply only that the question comes up a lot, people search the web for an answer, find that answer and repeat it, nearly verbatim. After all, here it is again ready to be picked up by Google -- with no more reason to assume it's the truth than "I saw it on a website, so it must be true!"

I don't know how many of you play poker, but there are a couple of things that strike me odd: first the idea that there is a "standard ante," and secondly that it would have been "two bits," or 25 cents as long ago as the phrase must have been popularized. After all, when then did the phrase "penny-ante" come into being? The 13th century?

Two bits, 25 cents, was a fair amount of money a hundred years ago as pocket change goes. It's a whole different thing from two cents, almost meaningless money, today.

Another explanation I found on the web claimed that "two cents" was, in the late 1800's, commonly thought of as meaning very cheap -- an example: a cheap cigar was a "two-center." So "my two cents" meant "my opinion, for the little it's worth..."

Which, if either, is accurate? No idea. But at least the second one doesn't beg the question of how and when the conversion from "two bits" to "two cents" came about -- and why a similar conversion didn't occur in that little jingle, "shave and a haircut... two bits!"

That's intersting ..

Thanks for the info :)

I wonder how would "Just my two fils" sound ..
The problem is that we don't deal with such a small amount of money because the smallest used coin today in Kuwait is 5 fils :)
