Hi

Should I get a dedicated server or use a VPS when I open my website? The website uses Java J2EE technology and PostgreSQL server under Linux.

I plan to use a decent VPS (ServInt) initially then upgrade the plan and then move to a dedicated server. My concern is the upgrade or move to a different server. Do you think it will cause a lot of trouble? I plan to use the same host and create a relationship with them to do business long term.

I do have enough money to get a dedicated server initially but it won't last me long. Whereas with a VPS it will last me longer but I am sure there will be a lot of trouble when the upgrade comes.

My experience with Linux is average as I know how to install stuff, write program and so on.

Thanks for your help.

Cheers

Having a VPS isn't as complicated as many think. I am with Defender Hosting and its like a giant reseller account with root access so if you find the right host, don't worry about needing Linux knowledge.

That said, a VPS account will suit you fine. Upgrading your VPS plan won't cause any hitch in your service. And yes, it is very easy to switch to a dedicated server (even easier with the same control panels if moving separate accounts). The most common way is to move all your files/databases from the VPS to the dedicated server and then switch your nameservers. Then just wait the 12-48 hours for the DNS to reside and you are set.

My users do a lot of searches on my website. Will VPS be adequate at the initial stage?

Yes. I have a large searchable database, huge forum and other scripts running and I've experienced no problems. I also host a few friends and family members who also run their own forums and scripts. You really shouldn't worry too much.

Go with dedicated server. Check out a thread in which they posted the benchmark from VPS and Dedicated servers.
