View Full Version : Moving from RedHat 9 to Fedora 2
tuxtux 10-25-2004, 04:19 PM Hi
I've been a forum lurker for a long time, so this is my first post.
I've had a 1and1 RH9 server for a while now, it came with RH9 and now I would like to move to Fedora Core 2 or even 3. I am running the Plesk 7.1.1 Reloaded.
Have you guys had any experience with this type of upgrade ? What special precautions are to take ?
I am fairly experienced with Linux but I am a big fan of fresh installs, so upgrades are new for me.
Thank you very much for your help,
Sincerely, Max.

But fyi, FC3 stable is due out in early november so you may as well wait.
I've never done an upgrade, always a fresh install. good luck
linux-tech 10-25-2004, 08:07 PM As the previous poster said, wait for FC3 if it's due out in a matter of short time.
As far as updating redhat to another OS, my advice: unless it's legacy (simple update there), don't do it. The best way to handle this is to order a server with your OS of choice and transfer the accounts over from there.
Why?
Firstly, you've inserted an unknown variable into the OS, being the Control Panel. Upgrading from release x to release y is problematic enough without this. Who knows how this will actually affect the upgrade process.
Secondly, you're upgrading from distro a to distro b. While they are both released or somewhat similar, it's still a very risky thing to do, even when you DO have hands on control of the server.
Thirdly, and more importantly:
You have no control of the server physically. Unfortunately, that means if something goes wrong, then you're screwed and you run the possibility of that doing that.
Good luck
Techark 10-25-2004, 08:57 PM Consider moving to CentOS instead of fedora, longer shelf life and the upgrade is very easy. Search the Howto forum for a post by haze on how to do it.
innova 10-26-2004, 11:08 AM I second the CentOS recommendation. In case you didnt know, its essentially identical to RHEL, minus proprietary (not OSS) software and Redhat logos.
The HUGE advantage to CentOS versus fedora is that the release cycles are MUCH longer.
Its equally easy to upgrade to either fedora or CentOS from a RH9 box.
Check it out!
apollo 10-26-2004, 12:20 PM yes... move to CentOS!!!
Sheps 10-26-2004, 01:28 PM I have(every once and awhile) spoke with Steve(Linuxguy) and IIRC, he runs CentOS machines now.
The first time he installed it, he came up to me and told me to switch right away(that was how much he liked it :P )
tuxtux 10-26-2004, 04:22 PM If I switch to CentOS, how are the package erratas managed, since I wont be registering for a paid RHN subcription, where can I get the upgrades ?
Thank you all for your input!
You get your updates via yum, and updates are normally released 1 - 2 days after they are released. That is, except for major releases, as they tend to involve a lot more programs then the regular security updates do which involves more work in building and testing before release.
We've migrated all our redhat linux boxes to CentOS, its a beauty.
