I am so pissed.

I was going to work on my website background, and I opened my "pictures" drive expecting to see about 16 folders and 360 files, but intead there was nothing there... I said "Ok, I'll use a backup and get the stuff back". So I navigated to my "Backup" drive and there was supposed to be 3 files in there... There were NO files in there!!!

I took a file count and I'm missing about 4,200 files totalling about 4gb.... Oh, well. Windows ends up screwing me out of 1000's of files every few months. In the past 8 mo I have lost over 35,000 files totalling about 30GB. THank god my site (offline) most documents, etc havent fallen prey to windows yet.

I'm gonig to quit backing stuff up, everytime I back stuff up the network crashes. Good thing I have a "pictures" backup CD made on November 20, 2000.

What Version of Windows are you running? When was the last time you've formatted and done a reinstall?

Even though I can hardly stand Windows, I really don't think that it's to blame here; seems like you're using pretty bad hard drives or whatever you're using.

Yeah, uhm.. I'd always suggest a 200 or so mhz comp with enough space to do nightly backups.. or a spare computer will do fine.. just zip.. connect via network and upload..

I'm running Windows 2k Pro. I would use Linux but my current software doesnt run on linux otherwise I would have used Linux ages ago. Last format and fresh install was about September 20, 2001. The files were on another computer (home server) that was beginning to crash and hang alot. So now I'm reformatting and reinstalling windows on it now.

My computer is set to backup my heavily used directories (Documents and Pictures) on every shut down. Since it has been about 9 mo before the server was formatted, I'd figure that I would go ahead and format it. The server has my website, and backups on it. Err *had*. The server averaged about 15 hangs, Illegal ops, and blue screens a day if you needed to rename, create new folder, and other basic operations.

Oh well, I got most of my files back so I'm not complaining too much anymore. Now for the long process of getting the software installed again. The computer is also used by my parents who only browse the Internet, check email, and work on photos. They are knowledgeable enough on computers not to change any settings, or mess around with the directories.

I would say someone is deleting them or you have bad drives.

Well everything is installed (well almost everything) and the computer is running faster and better. Kinda hard to believe its only a 266 :)

I traced to Blue screens, and illegal ops to Kernel32.dll and IOS.vxd and so far so good after the format. I think windows needed its ass formatted or the C drive is begnning to go (I'm thiking the latter). Looks like its time for them to invest in a new HD **SOON**.

Ever notice when ever you verbally threaten for format your computer, it usually behaves for a week or two...
