OK, I'm another newbie planning my first website, but it's gonna take a while... So I don't really want to pay a Web hosting fee just yet... Cheap? Yes, I know...

So, in the meantime I want to register my chosen domain name.

I see that Stargate offer a free email account simply for registering with them. Does anyone else offer this?

I just thought it would be a neat feature, while building my future "virtual home".

Oh, and it's nice to finally have found a place like this!

Other registrars are doing this as well. I even saw that verisign is running a promo for this right now.

Thx,

I checked out the Verisign offer and the price is insane. $29 to register a domain?!?!?

And an extra $20 to get the email adress!?!?!

Anyway, appreciate the reply! Will check around some more.

So, what's wrong with Stargate? ;)

I mean, even if you find a registrar that's 0,5$ cheaper, I doubt they'll offer you POP3 accounts *and* SMTP and DNS and...

And even if they do, is 0,5$ worth hours of your time spent looking for a cheaper deal?

(come to think of it, I'm not even getting 0,5$ for writing this?! :D  )

Believe me -NOTHING is wrong with the price!! I wouldn't care if the charged more, but after browsing the forum it seems like a lot of people have run into all kinds of different problems.

Right now I'm seriously looking into the option of paying for email hosting since I could use it to help my family get rid of those awful commercial accounts;)

Anyway - have you tried Stargate? And can you recommend them?

The only experience we've had with stargate is via an existing customer of ours.

Control panel is excellent :)

I have several domains with them and the'ye are ok. I wouldn't say great but they are atleast as good as any other registrar I have tried.

I have a resellers account with them but I don't use it actively at the moment. Their sales rep didn't keep his word about a deal and I took my business elsewhere. But they do have a good system and I might start using them again...

Thanks!

I think I'll give them a try, can't really go wrong with that price!

Oh, one thing - how are their TOS? Anything to beware of?

thx,

I use stargate.com. don't have any problems. Can't beat the services they offer for the price.

Overall OK..
Customer support is good if you get the right person..
...The only quirk is the sign up system which seems to go haywire once in awhile.

But for $8 I think its a good deal

I also use Stargate for several domains. I've contacted them once for a settings issue that I just didn't understand and I was promptly given instructions for what I needed. Since then, at least since last September, I haven't had to contact them again.

They do offer e-mail but there is a small catch. You have to use their DNS servers. This won't be a problem while you are just building your site and not hosting but when you do, you can't use the hosts DNS. It's a little confusing if you've never made those modifications before but it can be done. Once you set it up, it works like a charm.

Thx for all the replies!

Yes, I gave them a try and it worked out well. Set up the domain and email account a couple of days ago. The only "problem" had to do with some of the settings in Outlook Express.

But it's working great now!

And now: web hosting! Looking forward to that one!
