It looks real, but you have to place a banner on the pages that are hosted there and you have to have at least 5,000 page views daily. I could not find a TOS on their site though. They also say that they will manage the server for you. I'm not sure if you get root access. It may not even be a real dedicated server (maybe a shared server) who knows? :) I'd contact them about the TOS before signing up with them, but it's worth a shot. Duster 11-23-2000, 03:33 PM I wouldn't fault them for their misuse of the term "free", but there are other concerns I would have. (Free does not mean just no cost, it also means no obligation). They have several different hardware configurations with corresponding bandwidth allocations yet give no indication of the requirements for each. I would guess that it would depend on the traffic generated by your site. They place a banner on your site for a trial period of 15 days to assess the traffic and see if you qualify. Presumably, the type of server you get (and the corresponding bandwidth) is based on that level of traffic. There are some deceptive claims on their site that I would find troublesome. They claim 24 hour, 7 day a week support by e-mail. More likely, it means you can e-mail them at any time and they will get back to you at some point. All their talk about "best support on the web" and other "best on the web" smells like week old fish to me. On examination, there seems to be little value in their offer. If you have a busy site and don't mind ad banners, why not just pay for your server and keep the ad banner revenue for yourself? That makes more sense to me. Under their plan, the more traffic you generate, the more bandwidth (and better hardware) you get (presumably), but no additional money. When you control your own server, any increases in revenue go into your pocket. Which plan makes more sense to you? mkaufman 11-23-2000, 04:09 PM All their talk about "best support on the web" and other "best on the web" smells like week old fish to me. Yep, I saw that too - quite annoying. I wonder if there is any limit on how long you have to stay with them? I would be int. if there is anyone out there. |
