View Full Version : accept credit card payment
bingo-ingo 10-23-2004, 08:30 AM Hi there,
i've a question. i would like to accept credit card payment arround the world for my customers, so what i've to do?
I just take a look at PayPal because i thougt it's maybe the easiest way but it seems to be difficult because the customers somtimes get invoices with different amount (depends on traffic, domains, ...).
My Question: What can i do? What are you doing?
Best,

will7 10-23-2004, 08:36 AM My brother made a site for a company who used Worldpay (www.worldpay.com www.worldpay.co.uk) and they said they were good. But they cost, but I guess you don't get good things for free!
http://www.2checkout.com/ is one of the most popular and inexpensive.
Easy to use and operated by many auto-creation scripts.

It depends on where you are located & how much you might be processing. If you are in the United States & processing less than $1,000 a month, 2CO might be a good option for you.
You will need a merchant account and an electronic payment gateway. If you choose Paypal or 2CO, they are a third party provider & you will use their own gateway / SSL cert to capture & process credit card data.
The LinkPoint payment gateway is probably one of the strongest out there. It is owned by the First Data Corporation. First Data has been doing electronic money transfers since 1871 and they were the first processor of both VISA® and MasterCard® bank-issued credit cards in 1976. First Data processed 12.2 billion transactions in North America alone in 2003.
Authorize.net is probably the most advertised electronic gateway. A lot of people think they can sign up with them and immediately start to accept credit cards. They do not release you need a merchant account as well. Authorize.net even uses the First Data platform to help facilitate transaction processing.
Verisign also has a payment gateway. Verisign is probably the most recognized name because they also offer other services and products for the internet (i.e. SSL certificates, domain registration, hosting, etc). You do not need to purchase everything from Verisign to have a successful e-commerce business.
All three gateways will accomplish what you need. They all provide an API to allow you to accept credit cards on your secure web page. You will need to purchase an SSL certificate. Some benefits to this are:
Your customer will stay on your website
They will see the same design on the checkout page
Each gateway will also provide their own secure webpage to capture your customer's personal information. Some benefits to this are:
No credit card numbers are processed on your site, relieving you of your responsibility
You do not need to have an SSL certificate
If you are in Canada, you might check out PSIGate & InternetSecure to get you set up to accept credit cards
JodoHost 10-23-2004, 10:45 AM We use LinkPoint and and use it to process a large number of payments everyday. Works very well for us and I'd recommend them to anyone over authorize.net
realvaluehosting 10-23-2004, 12:28 PM Welcome to WHT bingo-ingo!
We are using Plimus.com as our payment gateway. There is no cost of signing up and there is no monthly charges. They charge on transaction basis. We are satisfied with their services at present :)

We currently use WorldPay.com to process payments, their service is amazing and support is excellent.
We use their payment gateway which means we don’t require a SSL certificate and we do not need to worry about processing credit cards through our site.
gghosting 10-23-2004, 07:49 PM I would say you should stick with PayPal.

PayPal and 2checkout are the best and inexpensive options.
Though I've not used WorldPay, but heard a lot of good things about them. But WorldPay is a bit expensive to start with.

rooshine 10-24-2004, 04:12 AM I would recommend keeping a healthy distance from 2CO. I set up a site for someone who used them. A 2CO error caused a few transactions not to go through. Truth is the error was not widespread, but it cost this person a few sales and so she was understandably upset. She placed a ticket, and they waited hours to respond. She had no way of knowing at that time how often the error was occurring, and they would not get back to her. She called their customer service, and still no response. The only way she was able to reach them was because she had a phone number for someone who works there. It took them almost 24 hours to make any kind of official reply, and when they did it essentially was, “so what.” The next morning, she got a nasty email from a support person there.
No matter how well run a company is, there are going to be issues. It's important not to judge them solely on these issues, but instead on judge them on how they deal with these issues. You can tell a great deal about a company by how they respond when you have a problem, and I learned a great deal about 2CO. I will never trust them as a vendor again. Things may run well for a few months or even a few years, but when you eventually have an issue, they most certainly will not be there to help.
cdgcommerce 10-24-2004, 08:47 AM Some other payment gateway options to consider would include iTransact, eProcessingNetwork, Plug-n-Pay and CyberSource.
iTransact has built-in free recurring billing and a host of other nice features.
eProcessingNetwork is a solid solution offering an Authorize.Net emulation mode and other features & benefits.
Plug-n-Pay has a nice Quickbooks module and many of the same features of the above solutions.
And finally, CyberSource is a high-end solution that has a Fortune 500 clientele and which processes more online transactions than any other payment gateway system in the world.
Keep in mind that each gateway has its own unique feature list, interface and pros & cons - so you will want to describe your needs to whichever merchant provider you speak with and ask which option(s) would meet your needs.
VN-Ken 10-24-2004, 11:29 AM We use CDG Commerce. I've been with them for a couple months.
